As a fairly new beekeeper, I have been hampered by all the asterisks / working out which site is implied from links because I need to gain from the knowledge of others. I can probably recognise a blatant plug and either ignore it or look and use common sense to weigh up its value.
Perhaps having a minimum number of contributions/posts before you are allowed to post a link may at least deter those who want to join just to advertise.

Tricia - if you need help on a particular post then please feel free to PM me.

Though I agree you shouldn't have to

You'd think wouldn't you!

A moderator just deleted a link to a garden beehive on eBay that no-one in their right mind would buy but which many people on this forum would find interesting due to it's total naivity of all things bees. It was obvious that I'm not the seller and that it wasn't a commercial link but it was removed potentially allowing a misguided product to get in the hands of a new beekeeper with disasterous results! :(

Yes R2... i deleted your link,as i deemed it to be commercial, regards selling of a mass produced hive, and i also deleted the entire post you made after,as this was trying to bypass the rules, and included a personal attack on me for the deletion.
Think before you link.

A personal attack? That implies that I called you an idiot or something! Which I didn't - I just pointed out that it wasn't a commercial link (ie. I'm not the seller) but a link to something of interest to the forum. You guys really need to sort this out once and for all as this forum is starting to get a bit of a reputation...

It should be sorted once and for all soon R2,thats what the poll is for...

Anyone reading that thread will have a pretty good idea of the suitability of that 'hive' for beekeeping.

Am I right in thinking that apart from this thread opening up debate as to whether to relax the censorship of naming companys we use, we are now apparently not allowed to post links to any items on their sites ?!?

Its not Thornes or Paynes or Maismores or anyone else actually posting these links for their commercial means - it is members trying to be helpful to other members.

This has gone way too far in my mind.

because you didn't get a yes vote?

perhaps there should have a been a debate thread to discuss the positions and then have a vote on the options but I guess its a little late now

Agreed - the Poll is poorly conceived - no-one would want Micky Maisemore to pop in constant links to his site but where's the harm in Beekeeeper Bob letting the forum know that Maisemore's are having a sale?

The poll options should have been, perhaps:

[_] No external links
[_] No commercial links by sellers
[_] Links

Jezd what has a "yes" vote got to do with it? I'm just simply agreeing with someone that something has to be done, either way and that it's getting out of hand! Your assuming things and we all know assumption is the mother of all f*$£ up's

Either way it's silly I for one don't want to see the forum busting with commercial links by sellers, It's a public forum and I'm happy to go with what ever Admin decides.

Yes, a sensible policy to control links posted by someone with a commercial interest becomes silly when it stops neutral individuals posting helpful links.

However links to other fora and to Dave Cushman's site, and also words like 'Th**nes', '******' and whatever are now permitted so at least there has been progress.

Flippin' heck. You're still not allowed to say T h o r n e s or P a y n e s! I misunderstood. I'll take back the comment on progress. Only a little progress.

Gavin and every other member I am open to ideas,in time we should get there.

I am trying to protect the enjoyment of the forum without spoiling it to much.

So please stop the asterisk thing and get the moderators to remove blatant self-promoting links and try it for a few months...

Hi Mark

I am trying to be helpful, and thought I'd seen the names (not links) of commercial companies posted successfully earlier.

This poll is about (presumably clickable) links. Personally, I don't feel strongly one way or the other about links to commercial sites when posted innocently by someone trying to help others. I'd let them through but your vote seems to be going the other way. No matter.

The asterisking of common names of beekeeping supplies companies seems to be a different matter. It is a bit silly when folk just change the way it is typed to get round it. Folk are just chatting about things that beekeepers need to know, so why not relax that one?

Keep up the good work anyway

Gavin

Time's up - please make a decision before I die of old age!

Erm - what's this thread I've been following then? I followed the thread for a while before voting - simples

Yes [ I assume that means yes to links]
Yes but only if the poster does not own/or is in no way connected with the business [another way of saying no commercial link by sellers]
No [ i again assumed this meant no external links
Undecided [I'm not sure about this one]

seemed fairly clear cut to me - or am I just twp?:D
