I don't think Caddon is a workshpop, they import their goods. Maybe they have associates/links in Asia as on the 'About' page it states they work in Asia.

On a hive part I had from Caddon the underside had Chinese print inked on.

This firm is fine.

Bought a hive off them and it's OK. Only thing, as one poster pointed out, is that there is no mesh floor and they don't supply nails - apart from that fine.

Hi Ivor,

I bought one too, and got the varroa mesh myself.
You don't need nails if you use a proper glue - I use the Evostick waterproof.
Its expensive, but gives a good bond in about 15 mins if you clamp the joint.
And if you leave it 24 hours, it's like you've turned two pieces into one.
Very strong.

I don't think it's fair to comment on the hive, until I've gone through the whole process and finally have it built.

As I've said earlier in this thread; I judge a supplier/service by how they behave when things go wrong. A good reputation is valuable and hard to come by, so a good firm will protect that, and prides itself on good customer service. A bad firm doesn't care, but often that only shows up when things go wrong, and then the bad reviews start appearing to warn the rest of us.

So if you got one that was fine, that's great.
Some joiner you'll never meet - who works for very little on the far side of the world - was doing his job.

Whoever was making mine was clearly having a very bad day.
Hey, that's bound to happen occasionally, and in any business sometimes things don't run smoothly. People can make mistakes, be off sick, all sorts of stuff that has nothing to do with the manufacturing process itself.

But in the end, that's no problem for a decent firm who care about their customers.

I'll be able to take a view in about a week

I bought my Hive from my local Association and didnt pay any more than this really, I got the following:

Mesh Floor (with pull out verroa floor)
alighting ramp
14 x 12 brood box
queen excluder
crown board
super
4 inch roof
14x12 frames x 10
14x12 foundation x 10
Large Feeder
Hive Tool

I paid £140 for all of the above and had the benefit of knowing who I was getting it from incase there was a problem. I would say, use your local association.

You're lucky that your association does that, ours doesn't.

I paid £140 ...
Not all associations hold stocks. Self assembly? In cedar, whitewood or ply? Sounds a reasonable deal whichever, a bargain for premium materials.

Without wanting to advertise and puely for comparison purposes I see the big company starting with T have added a 14x12 option to their budget hive packs. It's one alternative for those without local suppliers. The 14x12 option is becoming one suppliers are having to offer in all their ranges.

Seems like quite a good deal but I dont like the look of the roof- its too shallow and I think thjiks would be false economy in the long term

considering it has frames and foundation for brood and 2 supers it's a pretty good deal. I had the kit with std brood, quality was fine as far as i can see

Was it ready assembled or did you need the capability to use tools? Did it need treating?

they've just brought out a 14x12 version for £170 - i'd go for that if you're going to go the complete kit path
