My Buckfast exploded from the off and the speed they built up exceeded all the advice I received away from this forum.

Buckfast do that.
Sometimes you just have trust what the bees are telling you.

Finally getting over the cold snap here. Temp was up to 6C yesterday with bright sunshine. I saw two colonies flying quite a bit with undertaker bees hauling out the dead. A few other colonies had a few bees flying. This is typical for bees of the line I've bred. They will fly and even forage a bit at temps down to 4C.

Nope, they swarm just as fast as any other type. They just do it far less often.

I have a hive with a 3 year old Buckfast Queen from the Beeman.. never swarmed once and looked like it was superceding in August.. not looked in since so a Spring surprise awaits .. or not.

I have a 2015 Buckfast who due to my mistakes swarmed and was recaptured twice in her first year. Hasn’t tried since and I suspect is likely to be superseded by spring. We shall see.

Built my 1st 5 frames nuc today from marine ply and a cut list for 3 more

5 frame nucs

I took my cedar to my friendly woodworking shop who kindly sized it and I cut the pieces for my slightly modified 5 frame nuc from Cushman. Mine is slimmed down to get two under one standard roof!
Brought the pieces back home, routed the sides and started assembling...... too chilly to carry on tonight..... tomorrow should see 4 nice cedar nucs :)
