I hope I don't need my calculator on Thursday

no you won't need a calculator,
we actually make this bit entertaining and fun!
this thread has been good practice for the question time afterwards :)

wood is porous material and poly's aren't.
high humidity inside the hive and low humidity outside wouldn't this draw moisture through the wood and help with evaporation ?

Depends on how porous the wood was, like untreated cedar with little wax or propolis inside. Similar to having two bottles upside down with a piece of wet rag inside, one bottle made from plastic the other from felt, some of the moisture in the felt one would dissipate through the side walls, but in the plastic one it would need to be mostly fanned out through the bottom entrance.

poly or wood will always be a personal choice as are a lot of other aspects in beekeeping. there is no 1 right way which some people seem to forget.

i myself will probably only ever use wooden hives and supers as i am a clumsy ham fisted accident waiting to happen and would probably break a poly hive on my first inspection.
i prefer wood
it lasts longer
you feel you get what you pay for
it doesn't break easily

Read this topic with interest....er....til' I got lost toward the end.
Have two questions for RAB though re; your post 'yesterday 12-30pm.
1) Who is Shirley?
2) What does she think about all this!!???!
LOL
Regards

Wow!

Obviously I opened the whole poly vs wood can of worms.

Some one asked many pages what my setup is and its 2 x wooden 14x12's with four wooden supers. One poly nuc, three poly hives and three poly supers.
I only have two colonies at the moment but am hoping to have the same luck this year as last year with bait hives (two arrivals after I put them up May the 6th).

Have to say, I just like wood...cedar, just because it looks nice. I have 2 poly hives and they are going somewhere where I don't have to look at them too often. Will be thinking about WBC style double wood hives...depending on what I learn.

make the lifts from 6mm marine ply with 50mm recticel glued on the inside.

I go through this in my talks and have stood up in front about 240 people in person and faced their questions afterwards sometimes upto 2 hours and will do so again on Thursday.
I am in the process of writing a scientific paper of this subject that will be reviewed before publication. The detail will be published there and as you know i shouldnt publish that on the internet before it has been published in the journal. I suggest you attend one of the talks and challenge me in person in front of an audience I will be glad to answer your questions. Perhaps you should ask DPearce4 if he is attending on thursday, and if he will check whether my answers are credible.Alternatively ask Skyhook.

Totally not true. You can talk about your finding before publication. I have done this many times.

I think you are thinking about Patent applications which must not be in the public domain before application. Even then once the application is files you can talk about it to anyone on internet or not.

So if you want you can defend your statement. I would be genuinely interested how you went about the calculation but cannot get to one of you talks.

Shirley this thread has become a mutual ego trip with insult and counter insult eclipsing any sensible debate .
I say ego trip because your liturgical jousting could be conducted via the PM SERVICE ON BOARD! .

Absolutely! There's some embarrassing willy waving going on here. Not to mention unacceptable levels of rudeness from one participant in particular :nono:

Oh I don't know ... there's been 89 posts and nearly 1900 views of this thread so I think there's a fair few willy watchers out here ... been quite entertaining and the rudeness is only marginal by comparison to some previous threads ...

I think it depends on the journal

I have roughly an equal number of both, and have to say the bees go up into the ploy supers very well and appear to cap the honey of much quicker. Whilst I am aware this is just an observation and not a study, I personally believe my bees are much happier in polyhives. This is just based on observation on my part, I am not into statistics and studies but my colonies in polyhives appear stronger, healthier and more productive. I definitely think they winter better in polyhives as well. That does not mean I am going to bin all my wooden boxes, but will probably gradually move over. It is always good to have an open mind, so I may even try some plastic frames this season.....meaning basically the only things in the hive not made of plastic will be the bees, the wax and the honey.

I checked my 1x poly hive and it was a disgrace (varroa tray in)
Water in the runners, mouldy propolis, mouldy pollen. I'll be moving them into wood as soon as the weather picks up.
I would however use poly supers over wood brood as the figures in Derks speech did add up.

How long did you leave the inspection tray in?

My trays are out and the hives are clean and dry inside as far as I can see from the top :)

Too long is the correct answer, although I suspect this would not have occurred with wood. The moisture absorbtion of wood is very important to most wood dwelling things.

The water absorption of wood coated with propolis is not easily found however it is bound to be less than bare wood. As regards the mould , one should be careful about applying a human reaction of disdane to it, after all we do consume rather a lot of moulds and yeasts and very tasty they are!

The hive type doesn't cause that.

No, more likely the thin poly roof....

I'd think it more likely that the roof wasn't on properly and rain has got into the hive through a gap between the roof and the hive wall. Is the roof painted?
