From a thermal point of view, a hive is just a scale model of building that has the doors left open and tens of thousands of inhabitants that go buzz and generate enough of their own heat during their activities that for a good part of the year they have to expend more energy venting excess heat than generating it.

Fixed for accuracy ;)

Ummm.
That might be accurate in southern Spain, Italy or Greece - but its a bit optimistic for the UK climate, and, ummm, even more so for Wales!

Close the door and see how long they last.

make sure you dont have wood or non-foam plastic bridging the inside to outside. This is especially important at the top. You really need to have PIR or EPS with no thin spots or leaks at the top. Thin spots or wood will increase condensation at that point. Better to replace the entire roof with a thick piece oF PIR that has a thin, outer wood shell for external physical protection

I was being polite.
My bees don't see things the way you do, obviously they do not really need PIR or EPS.

Edit: Bees go buzz do they? I didn't know that, wow you learn something every day.

... obviously they do not really need PIR or EPS.

I think the difference is between what they "really need" in order to 'usually' survive, and what conditions will tend to increase productivity and maximise their survival chances.

Using insulation won't guarantee a bumper crop.
But everything that tilts the odds in my favour has to be a good thing. :)
