Trouble is, the pen pushers are aware of OA being used for beekeeping, and have already said that using generic OA is illegal, so yes, the only way would be to make using neat OA 'legal' by VMD licence which would be a real battle I think, and once someone sees there's money to be made from it............

make it look more attractive to get a license for plain old OA

The idea has been examined here for years but the body that ought to have agitated and organised an OA license did the opposite, supported the VMD and the commercial interest to help authorise the clag we have: ApiBioxal (same stuff as Mr Poot bought, no doubt, but with added clag and tick-boxes).

The existing licenced suppliers would scream blue murder if anyone tried to licence generic OA .. plus the VMD are going to throw a wobbly as it would allow anyone to buy generic OA from any source ...

You would have to have some sort of magic beans in it to stand any chance of getting a licence ... and then .. you are probably looking at retail margins/packaging etc. on a par with the existing legal products and that defeats the object of getting a generic product listed ...

Used to be the case that beekeepers outside the UK were allowed to use OA, but the US has fallen in line and allows only ApiBioxal, although (sensibly) does not restrict multiple treatments or when supers are on hives.

OA is produced to an invariable formula and purity of 99+% is routine so the risk of poor product is low, and when in use VMD regs won't stop the clumsy beekeeper poisoning itself with ApiB.

If this scenario is reasonable, why bother with regulating a commonplace product that even when regulated poses a risk to the user? Commercial seduction meets avoidance of litigation? If so, the BBKA was the vicar that married them.

I am assuming that they are trying to stop acids from being used in the way they have been, by spraying it in people's faces, so I have put up with the 3 attempts for a courier to deliver some to me last week.....It's a bit of a pain, but it was worse for the victims of those crimes, I am sure.

Sorry, that was liquid, Acetic, but any acid liquid would be as harmful.

If I was minded to attack another with an acid, I'd go for the easy option and drop into a corner shop to buy bleach.

Makes you wonder how long caustic soda will be allowed to be sold (strong alkali), much more hazardous to handle than OA!

it's got nothing at all to do with the fact that OA is an acid (liquid or not) it's not being controlled because it's an acid but because it's also a poison. That's the issue with the current act, they have mixed precursors (used for either drug manufacture or bomb making) in with poisons, which are there for obvious reasons.
