I'm confused - how is a link in the the text I'm reading being 'rammed down my throat'? It's there if I want it. It saves me from having to search and possibly miss (or get distracted from) the item/article being referred to. It opens in a new window so my Forum window stays open for longer.

Dear confused, I think having manufacturers / suppliers links added into the posts is 'ramming it down my throat' if I want to find out who / what is being referred to, I will go and search. (but I was taught to feed myself, and not be spoon fed )
you can always have more than one window open! ( there's even a split screen option )
use one for forum, and another for searching the web, so that's that problem solved.
as for the short attention span, dunno the cure for that ;)

Q. Can anyone tell me where I can get some glasses as I've just sat on mine?
A1. Try Specsavers or Boots - both pretty good in my opinion.
A2. www.specsavers.co.uk are good whereas boots don't supply a cleaning cloth with their cheaper specs.

I don't find the two optitions mentioned above as good as optical express
http://www.visionexpress.com/

and these may be worth a try as well...lol....

<sigh>Specsavers was just an example - where would you draw the line? Obviously Thornes and Paynes mustn't be mentioned or linked to in case someone finds them and buys something from them. What about Cuprinol or B&Q, Apilife Var and Lactic Acid? Might they all be excluded too just in case?

You'll forgive me for finding this whole discussion a bit pointless - everyone seems to be trying to solve a problem that doesn't really exist. On this forum you have to register to post and cannot PM or add links until certain volumes are reached - this eliminates the one post wonders who turn up, post a link to their product and disappear. You can report posts and posts are moderated. At present the 'asterisk' system is causing problems with broken links and making some posts unreadable.</sigh>

This forum has the potential to be the 'best in breed' so please allow it to run freely without unnecessary restrictions.

Hey, if it's working in three months I might just contribute a quid or two!

All good stuff for those that have the time etc. but that's not what the internet is about - it's called the World Wide Web for a reason - everything links together, that's why we have links. So we have one click vs open new window, put in search term, open various windows, drill down etc etc. It's not spoon feeding, it's efficiency!

I say no to advertising but if there is a tab next to home blogs albums on the top of the page then I can't see why businesses cant have a commercial link there away from the main threads and get them to pay for the space

How many of you on here have been to the "American Bee Forum" ? It allows commercial links and is not over run with them like people on here think would happen.. They also have 2000 more members than this site and still...not over run.

I think less moderation is a good thing. Moderators should be exactly that, a moderator between parties when things turn ugly.... to clean things up, slap the hands involved. They don't need to be censors on everything we post.

How often do people post T*****. We all know what was posted...so why are we censoring it?

Spiders are crawling this and other sites all the time... allowing links would boost the sites search engine rating.

Only inbound links help in SEO,outgoing links devalue a website.

I can show you info that counters your statement, but I am not alowed to link to a commercial site

They both boost the sites rating, outbound just has less value than inbound.

In some cases - a link to a site you haven't found - or a page you miss is very helpful...however ***** isn't - surely common sense should play a part? We aren't always computer/internet wizzes. Nno, I don't want pages smothered in ads...but helpful links do just that...help...

"Lies, damn lies and statistics: The manipulation of public opinion in America" just one of the many books you can read about statistics and manipulation of figures. There are many books on the subject. This poll has a bias one no vote and two yes votes. To split the yes vote! Of course I may be given a different explanation. This has forced me to vote tactically. But due to the bias we should start the poll on an even playing field. I have no commercial gain just a sense of fair play.

so,would the yes links vote alow hivemaker to talk about the use BA
site and his plans .rather than a its closed end of subject .

I do hope Admin 'sifts' the 'yes' replies on the poll and removes all those made by the commercials that have voted.

I would suspect that there is a serious bias in their voting, in that the majority would like to see commercial links allowed (there will be a few who will have honourably abstained -ITLD per eg - and a few who will have wanted the forum to stay commercial-free). Each of those 'commercial-free' votes (no) from commercial members should probably be worth double!

Manipulation of figures!!
Buckfast breeding started in the UK.
A commercial beekeeper breeds a strain of bee, resistant to varroa, shb, Asian wasps etc in the future and this forum is not allowed to publish the info. Oh dear we now have to get our bees from abroad because they have died out and we have no links for buying in this country. Do you want it to get that silly? It only drives people away from this forum to others that are more accomodating. Shirley we can rise above that.

Some commercial forum members advertise, with prices but without links to their own sites. Which way is their 'serious bias' likely to be?

The memberlist says there are 7,043 forum members, most will probably have joined to be able to read more than 3 posts in one sitting. I'm surprised nobody's concerned that only a hundred or so have voted so far. But, maybe, that's the nature of beekeeping decision-making?
