They would use common sense.
As many of us have said, this works fine on other sites. Why will it be so different on here?

Pete, you know exactly what I mean.
I think the way forward is to try this for 3 months and then have another discussion and a vote.

I think it would involve deleting links if they became a problem, too many, but it would then cause a another problem, because all commercial links being allowed anyway,so non could be deleted.

The dividing line is surely between sellers peddling their wares, and references to suppliers in conversation. There seems to me to be a world of difference between 'Glasshives' posting 'Our new hives are great, view them here (pain in the ****, clogs up the site); and me posting 'I'm thinking of trying one of these glass hives, does anyone have any experience with them? (the stuff that discussions are made of and, it seems to me, the stuff that useful discussion would be difficult without- the hardware being the big part of beekeeping that it is.

.

Depend on which vote won,if yes to all commercial advertising then plenty would be on here with links, lots of them, and in every post they made. If the second vote then it may be okay, but knowing this forum,if someone put a link on in a thread saying you can buy x from here cheapest, the next umpteen posts would consist of loads more links to even more companys for the same item, including never ending arguments about which company is best from each person adding their particular link.

Let's just try it - remove the asterisk list, re-issue the rules, allow users to report posts, allow moderators to moderate the posts and see what happens? !

Simples!

R2 [I don't run a business but if I want to sell something I'll use the For Sale/Wanted section]

ps. Just looked at the vote and the No's have it but it's not really what this is about - it's about blatant commercial links versus useful links to suppliers etc

Not sure we're all thinking clearly here: we're all on-line if we're on the forum, if we want commercial links we can google for them, we don't have to have them rammed down our throats.

I can just think of the naus of one or two persistent 'tryers' and the resentment/argument they caused, all very entertaining but I don't come on here to get angry and it just keeps me away. And often these 'tryers' don't even subscribe to the forum.

Let's keep it simple, amateur (meaning 'done for love' originally) and as near to how it is now as possible? Please?

Here at least we are free from having rubbish rammed down our throats. It's refreshing. I get tired of the sheer volume of advertising everywhere and this is something of a sanctuary...

I find the stars in general a pain.

MA and others,

There is always the PM system for use should you feel so inclined on those few occasions you might find it 'a pain'. It works. Also, if you have to go that extra step to find out, you tend to remember it better.

Not really the point RAB - I nearly always know what the stars refer to, but God gave us links to be able to click on, and I still see no point in needlessly sticking ***s in words - it fools no one.

That said the majority seem to be against change so I'll grin and bear it.

I think that's why I suggested keeping links to a subsection in the For Sale/Wanted section. Those who want to find suppliers would have a knowledge base to start their search. Links or commercial references in other sections could be allowed if they're in context, or removed by mods if/when the mods notice they're out of context.

Supplier lists are useful to newbies. Only yesterday I noticed a link to one that I hadn't seen before despite using Google. Low priced flat-pack ply hives. I might take advantage, but I'll be asking 'you lot' (for want of a better way of putting it) for any experiences you might have had with them.

Perhaps, alongside the For Sale/Wanted sections the might be useful:

  • List of known suppliers (with links)
  • Supplier reviews (only by experienced beeks(?))
  • Product reviews

Whatever happens, I'm learning shed-loads with the forum as it is. For most items I'll probably be sticking with local suppliers which I'll find out about from local beeks anyway. How the forum changes (if at all) may cause some disruption. Some will like it, some won't. Either way, I'll live and so will everyone else.

I'm confused - how is a link in the the text I'm reading being 'rammed down my throat'? It's there if I want it. It saves me from having to search and possibly miss (or get distracted from) the item/article being referred to. It opens in a new window so my Forum window stays open for longer.

Under the current regime, shouldn't "Specsavers" be asterisked in case someone actually goes there?

Here's my logic:

Come and see my lovely glasses at www.specsavers.co.uk - obviously a plug and should be moderated/deleted

vs

Q. Can anyone tell me where I can get some glasses as I've just sat on mine?
A1. Try Specsavers or Boots - both pretty good in my opinion.
A2. www.specsavers.co.uk are good whereas boots don't supply a cleaning cloth with their cheaper specs.

Seriously, having had a look at it, the Directory seems to be more targeted at advertising by commercial suppliers, not beeks telling (newbie) beeks about commercial suppliers, if you see what I mean.

It also seems more than a little sparse. I get the impression it only contains a link if a company has submitted an application for one. Perhaps it needs a make-over to make it more user friendly? Perhaps this would be the fate of a new subsection of the forum? Who knows. Any 'Commercial Links' section would need to be maintained by someone willing to maintain it. It would also require active participation for reviews to be much use. I'm thinking it would probably just not work as well as it would really need to.
