I have on offer someone who would love to have some bees at the bottom of their garden.

Perusing my OS maps ( it is something I do quite often... quietens the mind and I love maps!!!)

I note that as a direct line of flight the new possibility is exactly 2.9 miles away
( love those metricated miles!)
BUT there is a HUGE hill in the way rising many meters above the surrounding terrain by some 300 meters (333 above sea level.... never did get that as it goes up and down!!) and it has a stonking great chimney on top!!!

So unless little ladies take oxygen with them I would suspect that a 3.2 mile trip would be needed for them to trudge back home.

By road it is 3.4 miles.

What do YOU think???

( I saw a sign on the sea wall at Newlyn that said mean sea level... and the sea was meters below it... so much for rising sea levels!!!)

I await your replies... I would love to be able to give a prize to the best one!!!bee-smillie

Sorry completely lost me , What are you on about !

Well what I got from is that someone who lives near some oil seed rape, would love to have some bees in thief garden. Icanhopit can't help them but someone here can - perhaps. They enjoy the bees the beekeepe gets an out apiary.

The rest is talking about part of Dartmoor being in the way or kit hill.

OS= Ordenance Survey
OSR= Oil seed rape

Otherwise, dont know what the post is on about, but can I have some of what they've been drinking? LOL

I think what he means is, If he gives a swarm of bees away to theis guy who is 2.9 miles away as the crow flies, will the bees come back.

But thats just a shot in the dark.

Just do it. It should be fine.

Mead maddens the mind!

possibility of a place to put some hives but 2.9 miles as the bee flies (Crow?) in a straight line

However as pointed out Kit hill stands some 330 m in the way ( plus a chimney), so I presume bees would fly around the hill, not over it?

Question is

is the site far enough away from my back garden stances?

Duh! Lol. HE EDITED THAT!

That's my defence and I'm sticking to it lol.*

Wonder what the prize is for best answer. They won't go back if you keep them in doors for two weeks and then let them out. And when you do paint their feet with honey so they can find their way back . *. *. *. No . . . . Wait that's cats. No idea. 3 feet per day or more than ten miles unless a large obstacle in the way.*

I've got some 2 miles away with hill in between and moved between the 2. No problems so far.

This time of year I doubt if they are going far, and most will be new bees soon.

Actually i would say depending where you are in relation to kit hill and the other person if the bees, flying back would have to fight the predominant wind we have here, South Westerly it would make it more of an obsticle for them. But aside from kit hill it's flat as a pancake round here isn't it. Where are they going - kelly Bray, Condon Shop, Bathpool?

Icanhopit,

The bees don't know the 3 feet or 3 miles rule... It is a rough guide. Go for the move.

Kelly Bray..... the other possible site is in Launceston, but just a little too far away to cycle!!

The realistic light line of a bee is less than a mile *usually*

The three miles is to give a serious safety factor.

Move them
