I'm ok redwood but what a kind thought. I've got bait boxes out already. Perhaps I'll catch a polar bear or two :)

I wonder how different beekeeping would have been had Brother Adam tried to breed in to his genetic Buckfast cocktail an element of polar bear.

It's a good reason to upsize to the larger Langstroth box though.

I may have spotted one the other day scouting out one of my empty bird boxes, but I couldn't get a good look at it before it went.

Isn't the British Brown Bear more suited to our climate? Think they are long gone from this isle though no?

Don't worry - some clown is bound to want to re-introduce it shortly, at least it will keep the beaver numbers down :D

Ha indeed… Not sure what is at the top of George Monbiot's list. Some wolves maybe too…

Amazing story about how wolves totally changed Yellowstone National park for the better… but then here we already have problems with foxes taking lambs, let alone if we had wolves and bears! Maybe the wolves and bears would keep fox populations down?

On another note, the pictures I've seen on the internet of apiaries destroyed by bears in the states must be a heart breaking thing to find.

Here is one i made if its any help, ignore the stand as that hive is empty i used it as a template for measurements, the last picture is obviously on the active hive and you can see the entrance is pretty clear.

Yes you told me before, i will do it when the weather warms up it is joined with waterproof filler also , i also need to seal any exposed foam as the bees are chewing there way into it now i know what the mess on the inspection board was coming from, i think Erica did mention to me about sealing the foam. :thanks:

i have found a few melanic (black) European Queen hornets in hive roofs in north London, they cause a lot of reports during the summer because people think they are Asian hornets but they are just a blacker European hornet

i expect like black peppered moths you find in cities the melanic hornet has evolved to cope with industrialization and London smog of the 20th centurary
