Classic..... like the street shown for years in the London A to Z... I seem to remember near the Carson Glucose factory in Battersea... shown on all the 60s & 70s issues, but had been bombed out by the Luftwaffe in WW11 and demolished... replaced with a council garden! I even contacted A to Z as they offered a reward for telling them about mistakes.

AND ... anyone who has taken the RYA Yachtmasters will know about the 2 islands off of Salcomb!!!

For years surgeons were taught to describe the anatomy of a pigs liver when examined about the human one... a 16Cy description that nobody would dare dispute...

Then there is sugar shaking and matchsticks....

interesting topic!

The Ordnance Survey, and other mapping companies including AZ, put deliberate additions on maps to detect copyright violations. Apparently they are known as 'trap streets' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trap_street . If a made up street or change is reproduced in another source, you know they have been copying your work instead of surveying themselves. The practice has turned up in court cases http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2001/mar/06/andrewclark Something with as generic a name as 'sandy island' could well have started that way.

On the other hand there are plenty of databases that include addresses that don't exist any more. Last year's census sent out forms to many of them, I hear a lot of them had to be followed up when they were returned as 'undelivered'.

Brilliant!

Maybe I'll write a beekeeping book and put a trap fact in. Cant think of one off hand, but one will come to me.
