I took my then 15 year old daughter and three friends to a villa in Lanzarote ( I must have been mad! never again...couldn't cope with being in charge of nubile adolescents and leering local boys) Sorry I digress....Walking through orchards the fig trees were drooping with luscious fruit and stopping to pick a few for them I was met with an aghast........"Yuk, what are you doing? Are they safe to eat off the trees?"

It's a fair question: I tried that with an olive once in Italy. Still shudder at the memory... :)

Involved in planting an orchard in Ardwick, Manchester many moons ago. Kids aghast at the idea of fruit growing on trees. 'that's dirty, apples come from asda not trees'...

But the orchard is still there and doing really well! :)

2-YEAR BUMP but a q to all, esp @MuswellMetro. "Raw honey" is not a reserved description but "honey" is, and descriptors may be added. It's therefore a bit grey but is it the opinion of this house that "raw honey" same line same font will escape a hefty jail term?

'Raw' honey is just a term made up by the hipster trendy types to justify charging the earth for a poorly presented product - I don't cook any of my honey ipso facto it is raw.

I'll ask the FSA. I actually find "raw" rather an economical term. It's in standard use in the USA (cue rant) conveying lack of heat treatment.

Do the beeks on here generally add the botulism-rleated voluntary warning?

Pregnant women run the risk of of Listeria when consuming unpasteurised milk resulting in possible miscarriage, fetal death or illness or death of a newborn. Not worth the risk in my view especially if it can affect the health of a foetus that has no choice. Similarly feeding young babies raw honey on dummies etc and risk of infantile Botulism.

Do I B*llx - it's an American thing with no real foundation of truth just some very bad science, although I am thinking of putting a sign on my vehicle saying 'standing in front of this may result in serious injury - especially when engine running and vehicle is moving'

Can't remember seeing that health warning on my daily pinta. Years ago we had a milk round - my mother tells me that pregnant women were issued with milk tokens on the NHS.

Your Mother??

Well young man, when I ran a milk round we accepted milk tokens in payment, but they were primarily issued to be exchanged for powdered milk for babies.

We didn't sell powdered milk - and the tokens were issued when the mother first became pregnant not when the child was born (I know this for a fact as we were discussing a particular family - only one of the pregnancies went to the full term)

i was told recently by a very large raw chocolate producer I am missing a big trick not calling my honey raw I can add 20% to the price and sell double the amount according to him.

I haven't bothered to yet.

Lost count how many times people have asked me if my honey is raw honey.

Nor did I, I was commenting on your youth, not contradicting you.

I don't understand the lack of knowledge towards good food, it even tastes better than junk! Its surprising the amount of junk people eat. Most of my friends have such a poor diet that their poo comes out plastic wrapped!

Excellent observation.

Perhaps you should use it as toothpaste.

So I ended up with my local Environmental Health People and they were very prompt and helpful

"Thank you for your email.

KINGSTON

SOFT-SET

RAW HONEY

Is an appropriate description. Putting the word raw before honey does not affect the “Honey” reserved description.

Hope this answers your query.

Kind regards

ADD: TBH The "raw" is a matter of label balance as much as anything.
