I thought these photos might be useful for other beginners like me. I took them at the weekend and correctly diagnosed EFB. The SBI is visiting later this week and the colony will be destroyed. 😔

Really sorry to hear that :(

Thanks for the sharing the pictures.

What was it that first made you realise something wasn't right, smell, discoluration, etc?

The colony wasn’t keeping pace with my other ones. The queen’s laying pattern was patchy and odd larvae were not being sealed. I had a hunch that something wasn’t right so went searching!

What a crying shame - I’m so sorry for you, but well done for spotting it.

Has it been diagnosed by the SBI? My EFB didn't look like that or maybe I'm looking at the wrong bits.

Oh so sorry. Are you in an EFB hotspot?

I may be wrong (I am red green colour deficient) but these larvae don't look too happy.

That being said, I had a colony not too dissimilar to this a couple of years ago, got worried, called out the SBI and it was mostly sacbrood and varroa (some evidence of cells being opened here).

There is still a bit of evidence of segmentation but I agree the colour doesn't look right.

SBI & RBI have looked at photos. They are working with a diagnosis of EFB. There were some larvae that had gone slushy too. SBI visits Thursday.

Had a really useful time with the SBI. One colony does have EFB and a bit of sacbrood. Fortunately I am strict with hygiene and it has paid off. All other colonies & the other apiary are clear. Equally positive, I spotted a beautiful new queen in one of my splits, and she has just started laying.

I've just had an alert from BeeBase that there is EFB within 3km of my apiary (well, it's my house as I don't have any bees yet).

Yes, you are unfortunately in a EFB " hotspot" at the moment, a fellow beek has just had to destroy a number of colonies in your catchment area. Hopefully the seasonal bee inspectors will get on top of it before your bees are due to arrive 🤞

indeed! I've seen on BeeBase that there are 14 confirmed cases in my area - eek!
