We bought our jar labels from the large retailer beginning with the initial "T" but unfortunately we are finding that the print is rubbing off and smudging. Has anyone else experienced this or did we just get a dodgy batch?

They have obviously used an inkjet and not a laser. Complain

I never bought labels from a supplier, prefer to print my own however I did once buy a jar of honey with a label from that supplier and yes I found the same happened which convinced me to print my own!

If it was me I would definitely complain and see what they say.

Complain, their supplier may be ripping them off with cheaper ink jet versions!

I've just bought 100 from T****** and they're ink fast, no smudging

HAD 3000 UP TO NOW AND NO PROBLEM AT ALL.... BUT I WAS THERE ON SATURDAY AND THINGS HAVE CERTAINLY GONE UP IN PRICE SINCE THE LAST TIME I WAS THERE:hairpull:

The way to stop the ink running on stuff printed with an inkjet printer is to let the ink dry and then with a piece of kitchen roll, rub a little cooking oil onto the label.. This might be easier after you have stuck the label to the jar.
Put some oil onto a plate or whatever and dab the paper into the oil.

Sounds wierd but it does work.. It will darken the colours slightly.

The overprinting in black does come off. A lot of handling will do it. The presence of some solvents will make it worse, some hand creams for instance. Deet based insect repellant is notorious, removing print from carrier bags. Is this after public handling on a hot summer day?

Resisting involves a seal over the top, artists suppliers sell a spray to seal watercolours that might help. The legislation says it must be legible and indelible but not to any specific standards. If you print your own, another label over the top is quickest solution.

I am suprised that people dont use shrink wrap bags. Stop the labels getting smudged and acts as a tamper proof seal.

are they the see through ones ? if so I had the same problem the big T were happy to replace them free of charge for paper labels

Labels must be and remain legible. With a honey BB date of two years (and more) being perfectly acceptable, labels are likely to deteriorate before the honey! I gave up trying to faff around with a home-grown label solution. Mine are printed professionally 1000 at a time (1000 each, front, back and anti-tamper) for around 90 quid.
