I'm a firm believer in the benefits of insulation and have tried 3 versions of cosy. I indeed found problems with the robustness and also warping - whether this was due to dilithium or unicorns I've no idea but it was very frustrating when they stuck to the hives.

I now use poly brood boxes coupled with a standard roof that has 50mm of celotex glued in. I figure that they are well insulated when it matters the most. By the time I've got two or three supers on, OSR has worked it's magic and the brood box is bursting with bees.

From listening to DerekM's talk last week, insulating the whole hive, supers and all is as important in summer as well as winter.

In the summer it improves the bees ability to process nectar into honey, as well as keeping the brood at 35C as we never get to that air temperature in the UK.

Does Derek have any of his talks available online?

I've not seen any but I've been to two of his talks now.

It's very convincing science and I have to say very much confirmed what I have been practising since I started .. it very much crystallises down into a single concept or fact (Depending on where you sit on the beekeeping scale) - That well insulated boxes, that mimic the conditions the bees would have if they were living in their natural environment, are better on many levels for the bees.

It costs so little to follow Derek's ideas and insulate your hives that it really is a no-brainer in my opinion.

He does take a bit of stick from some dyed in the wool beekeepers when the questions are invited but he answers well ... and when I saw him the second time he was very well prepared for some searching questions.

He will, no doubt, be on the circuit again in the coming year and he is well worth going to see if he comes anywhere near you.

Yes....keeping my eyes peeled here in the wilderness :)

So far nothing is in the diary beyond the Western Marches. Best bet is to ask a BKA to invite me to talk... it will have to be in English though as I didnt pick up any Welsh in my 4 years in Gwynedd.

Well I've gone down this route for full sized hives deciding I'd rather blow torch wooden hives than mess with poly
I used screws to affix the sides and used waterproof duct tape in the outside

If this "route" is external insulation, then you will be losing significant heat out of the joints and those screws.

I'm assuming these talks are not free of charge and that there is a fee. It then becomes a commercial venture IMO and should not be using the forum to advertise.
