Right that's decided I have pm'd well known member see if I can get my hands on two queens of the 'darker some what more native bee' type.

Enough talk I want to see for myself!

Wallet opens with a creak..........

.
When I had pure like Black Bees, they were dark brown.
Caucasian bees were darker. monticola bees were glossy dark.

If the criteria to select a queen is "dark" that is really odd idea.

.

Whatever it is, it is indigenous. There is a haven on an island situation and you would be quite happy to see 'another' bee introduced, knowing what the outcome would be?
I'm astonished.

I am not advocating anything just trying to see some sense in the nonsensical attitude some have. Other than a possible change in colour I also wouldn't know what the outcome would be nor do you

I for one hope they work out for you and you get some lovely bees, please let us know how they do?

Carnibuckfistica.... you could get locked up for that...

But on a lighter note a chap called Ruttner? wrote tomes on various bee species in Europe, I seem to remember that one sub species was named for him on a small island in the Mediterranean....
Don't think "strain" has any real scientific basis... but a good enough way to describe a subspecies of bee for the not so scientifically orientated amongst us!
Needs to be said I am better at sciences than litarature and spellin... I have a secretary for all that stuff.

There are up to 50 colonies on this island and have been there for at least 35 years with no signs of inbreeding , which in itself is interesting.
Unlike the human population - and some of their outcome can be quite interesting too - if a bit worrying. :D

May be heading up that way in the next month or two - will have to try and have a mooch around.

In Amm circles I understand this constitutes a bulk order... better check they can supply all of them this season!

me too!

if I manage to get my hands on them I will come back with my info, would only likely be relevant to these bees though as you get good and bad in all types. But for what its worth I will come back on it.

Hi flemage,

I'm going to give it a go as well just waiting for queen availability, lifes to short to sit on the fence :)

very true, I totally agree. good luck with it!

the whole of beekeeping is a learning experience, bring it on!:winner1st:

Better get it peer reviewed in light of your word use.

One) I have a medical excuse to have problems typing and processing words (in fact a couple of years ago it would have taken half an hour to write that much)

Two) nothing to do with me except that I know the student

Three) how on earth did you draw that conclusion?

Four) what did you hope to gain from it?

Susbees,

Don't lower yourself to the same level some people on here just seem to love to criticise and cut others down without knowing the facts. Which is a shame as this forum is a fantastic place to learn and improve your skills.

Finman,

I think you are wrong about bees not foraging in the UK at 7.30 at night as mine are out there coming back covered in pollen and then out again early morning and temperature is nowhere near 15-20 degC (I wish :))

Bees were still flying at 9 pm here last night coming back with pollen on them.

Over 30 hives in my home apiary and they were foraging up to about 9.30. not in huge numbers but still working away.
