As admin of another forum it really isn't that simple........ We receive some 2-300 applications for membership every day, generated by "spambots"
(for chapter and verse, Google "Xrumer" and follow your nose), which are all part of the present "let's fool Google" way of doing business......
I'll try to explain - Google searchbots constantly trawl the internet, and catalogue what they find - the main object of businesses on the 'net is to be "top of the list" in Google, so they will go to extraordinary lengths to post their company name on various forums (each one "bumps the rating up"). It ranges from "one man bands" doing some relatively straightforward spam posting to the automated "Xrumer" operations. If you obfuscate a company name, it doesn't stop a human working out who it is, but it stuffs the "fiddle Google" spam.
Absolutely nothing to do with "censorship", everything to do with keeping a forum free of people taking advantage........
It can get to the point of being something rather sinister - recently several sites were bombarded with spam from an Indian company marketing a deeply dangerous, long banned in the west "icide" - they'd post an "article" referring to it's "safety" as regards bees in the hope that the searchbots would pick it up, and if anyone Googled the chemical name, they'd find favourable reports..........
The same technique is used worldwide, and there are armies of people paid peanuts to do it in "third world countries", known as the "50 cent army" as that's what they're paid............
So that's why forum admins tend to have sense of humour failure over all shades of spam - they spend a great deal of wasted time keeping their forum spam free - I tend to apply the duck test - "If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands" - slightest hint of "duckness" and there's a large mushroom cloud as another spammer gets nuked!
