if you go looking for problems in a beehive your sure to find them..

today 09.31 - just filled the contact feeder up they had a kilo in a week - there greedy things

My thoughts are that they really ought to be going out and finding their own feed.

Not at the temps around here :) but as regards greedy things , they will take down what you supply , they will be converting it into wax , comb building etc.

I suppose if I gloat I will be punished next month..

it was 15 degrees here an hour ago now it's 7 and raining.

i cannot see the fact that the OP is feeding is going to do any harm at all as stores are unknown .
space isn't a problem as they have foundation to draw out.
better to give them some food they might not need than to run the risk of starving them.

I was going by the fact that another beek not too far away was reporting quite reasonable weather.

sunny with showers for the next few days not terrible weather .
forecast says between -2 and 12 degrees over the next week , the week after is better .

the unknown stores levels are the only real worry .

More especially if they've only had this nuc for a week and there are new frames to be drawn.

now to today 's

just seen about 12 bees flyinhg on and out of hive nothing on them no food. why???

I think our concern is that you have put a nuc on probably 5 or 6 frames into a huge beehaus box and then added six frames of foundation.

You should put the frames of bees nearest to the door and added at most two frames of foundation. You then need a partition board to block off the rest of the space so they have the minimum volume to keep warm.

Remember they are going to have to keep the temperature at 35C to raise brood.

Bees flying out won't have any food on them.

Some returning will have pollen, but many may not.

If you have got them in the whole space of a beehaus get out there quick, take out the empty frames and block off the space.
I would go so far as to say fill up the rest of the space with old blankets or insulation or something.

Coldest night of the winter forecast tonight!
