Hmmm, did something the same with my Maisie's order, just a few bits and pieces that I planned to pick up at the National Honey show..... They've now put it on a pallet to be delivered in a couple of weeks :D

I've yet to tackle mine and dreading it just thinking about it.

I usually end up giving the workshop the once over at least twice a year, get everything back in it's place, clear the decks for some serious work, then clean up again when I find I'm having to climb over stuff to get at something I haven't used for a month or two.

Floor paint test run.

I bought 25 litres of British racing green floor paint for £20 last week and i thought i would try it out on a few tatty boxes.. i am pretty pleased with the finished result..the only problem is it will take me forever to get all the boxes the same colour..

You need some "Go faster stripes " to guide your Ferrari bees back home!!

How long did it take to dry???

Chons da

Thorne 3rds

Been trying to work out what needs to be done with the pack of Thorne BB thirds. About half of the panels need glueing, or filling and giving up on one box which is too rotten and knotty.

Sounds like a useful source of ekes.

Is it worth the hassle buying cheap..that is what you need to consider..although i can fix most things made from wood however i will not touch seconds anymore let alone thirds.. apart from frames which can be used for kindling if no good.

I like making stuff and the bees don't mind my standard of carpentry. It's all a matter of how much your time is worth. Second year beekeeper and never sold a jar of honey so everything is an expense.

Last year bought 2nds (£16/BB each) and they went together fine. Just a bit of filling.
Getting 4 from pack of 5 BB 3rds (£9/BB). Quality of the cedar is poorer. Might not be as warm.

I have put together quite a few hundred second quality boxes thus far, have had to use filler on one (small dead knot had fallen out and couldn't be found) and had to glue another dead knot back.
Second quality just means it is British grown cedar not Canadian (think of the reduced carbon footprint) which means maybe more knots, and they haven't gone to so much lengths with the finish.

The seconds I bought had patches of end grain. Weaker and transmit moisture better than 'cross'? grain. Made the mistake of using exterior gloss paint which blistered when the brood nest heated up in the summer.

Obviously you haven't a clue what 'second quality' means when it comes to frame parts.
And how many did you buy to begin with?

Obviously i do... ten super frames and 10 brood frames bought last year and the wax from China... where could i possibly go wrong.

Today I removed the bellows from my two smokers. The smokers are heavily covered with tar deposits. Following a recommendation form a friend I have placed the smokers in a bucket of caustic soda. I am told this cleans them well. I am yet to be convinced!!!! I will replace the bellows with new ones purchased from Simon-the-Beekeeper. They are almost identical in every way with the old ones.
