No, sadly they are in our garden and our responsibility! Allowed to get out of control by the previous owners! Mulitistemmed, oppressive, and have damaged the fence! Yep, a general nuisance!

Don't want to be held liable for causing heave to council properties though!! So if they say staged felling then I guess that's what we will have to do!

I dont understand why a staged felling with that type of tree. I would like to know the reason if they give you one.

I was only told that a staged felling would reduce the chance of 'heave' to nearby properties. But the technical team (surveyors?) still need to give their verdict, so it might end up not being necessary after all. Fingers crossed. The guy today said that yes, they were big but were also further away from the properties than he had originally thought so it may be okay to just remove them in one go. Much cheaper for us!

I will make sure that I question the rationale more deeply if they do insist on a phased reduction.

Thanks for the advice. You could save me £100's! If so, I will owe you a beer or two! :) :) :)

counted, sticky inspection board, no mites.....7 days after OA (326), turned over board, two days ago... - none?

Fondant time!!!!
Put small amount ontop of frames at Christmas to test if bees needed it,
Checked progress today..... Big hive have not touched it 14x12 + full super under going into winter. Small hive had used about 3/4 so gave them 1kilo to keep them going.
Will check big hive next weekend...... Don't worry I can check fondant level through small vision panel in insulated crown board.... So won't fully open them up unless needed.

Been out and had a look.
Both hives have got what looks like new bee orientation flights.

as a newbee can you till me what to look for ?just picked up a free hive a bit old its in the work shop now and I will make a start on it today

An orientation flight is when they come out not very far and then fluy about in little circles looking at the hive.

Mild and dry for the first time this year. A few bees out. Lots of bees not out (well I hope lots:)

Put fondant on all 4 hives today.
3 needed it, 1 probably didn't but as it is the first dry/ calm day and the forecast is rubbish I figured better safe than etc.

Weighed the hives.
They all have at least 10Kg stores left so no need for fondant.
With a bit of luck that will last till they get going themselves.
It's been an absolutely glorious day with hardly a cloud in the sky....
Some of the apiary crocuses are out :)

Made a start at re - pollarding a hedge that was done about five years ago . One hive much busier than the rest . Pussy willow is in advanced bud , 19 / 01 / 2014 . We're supposed to be 5/6 weeks behind the southern counties ( usually)

Hefting today - one light but I had already put fondant on about a month ago. Only 6 frames dummied down with Celotex but they seem to be happy having consumed about 1.5 Kg of fondant in 4 weeks so I will check again in the not too distant future with a view to adding some more. Lots of flying today, only 7C but bright sun and it makes all the difference, loads of bright yellow pollen coming back so looking good.

Hi all,
SE is obviously behind the rest of the country. All hives very active in the sunshine, but only one bringing back some pollen loads (whitish) and absolutely minute amounts at that! Nice to see them all active though, but not out of the woods by any means.

Pollen is going into a few of my hives too - seems to be only the ones getting most of the sun though! Yellow and white. Hope to see more activity in the other hives once the Leylandii are down and the place is flooded with sunlight again!

Went to check out the offer of a second apiary site a few miles away for a couple of my hives. Ticks lots of the boxes. Happy days!

Went and checked on the hives and four out of the eight checked were flying and small baskets of pale white pollen entering the hives.

Today 17 celsius.. I am so curious how this season will pass.. Found cornel in blooming..

Bees active whole day, even relative strong southern wind continues. They are gathering so much of pollen.

Nice to make home made liqueur with the fruit….
