I have used something very similar to good effect but I found a can of lighter fuel and a cigarette lighter is my favorite.

Its the new version of mine (now about 5 years old).

I think its brilliant for lighting a smoker.
Mine now lives in the bee box (might get another for the kitchen...)
You just need to keep the flame out of the smoke - I tip the smoker 45° and fire under the smoke - easier demo'd or discovered than explained. It works beautifully for smoker lighting!

The base just pulls off (mine has a bigger foot). Underneath there is an inlet valve for refilling from a typical gas-lighter refill aerosol-type can.
Mine lacks a 'window' onto the tank, so you have to judge whether or not refilling is needed.

There's a particular sequence to set two interlocks before pressing the big red button to ignite. Safe.
Mine has a slider on the right hand side (not shown in the photos) to adjust the flame size.

Brilliant thing (and about half the price of Lakeland's).

There is a better device at Lidl on 5th Dec. Turbo flexi gas lighter with refill £3.99.

Cheaper certainly, but why better?
Have you got one of those things?

AFAIK, that thing is essentially just a cigarette lighter with a long and flexible neck.

Lighting a smoker with a blowlamp (even one as small as this) saves all the faff over keeping different kindling fuels etc.
Lighting a smoker is quick and easy with a blowlamp.
I'm pretty sure that thing is slower and less easy ...

Buy both... then you get a cheep gas refill and a free flexi lighter to light the wax boiler gas ring with.

( Pollyhive... your propane wax boiler lost me my eyebrows.. more than once!)

Yes, I do have one already (from last year) and it is very good -has a long flexible neck and the flame is like a blowtorch not a cigarette lighter.

What sort of beekeepers are you that need these "toys" to light your smokers! Box of matches and some dry fuel is all you really need.

Well ... I'm one of the pathetic ones that can't light his smoker with a match ... they always seem to go out ... they don't make matches like they used to .. So I use a propane blowtorch to light the smoker ... which then sits on top of the compost bin where it goes out ... never had to use it with my bees !

I'll be in the queue for one of the Lidl ones as my blowtorch is a bit on the big side !

I lit my smoker with a magnifying glass once.... being bereft of matches or a propane blow-lamp... or a cigarette lighter !

in those days of sun !

Psah! never had any truck with them new fangled vesta thingies - if I haven't got my trusty tinder box to hand I just rub two boy scouts together to create a spark!

matches..... and a back up plan.......... more matches, although a lighter is a more modern approach but less reliable

In fact using a smoker is for sissies.
That's if your bees are little angels, come and work some of mine !!!

I keep finding lighters and they will keep me going for many a year.
