You think beekeepings pompous ha haa, you wanna try learning the complexities of fish keeping. There are lots of good natured people out there but some just like to throw in some science to confuse. I associate these folk to I.T. people as they want you to keep coming back for more since it keeps them in business.

As long as you understand that though it's fine and you get by!!

complexities!!? i studied marine biology, fish ecology and ichthyology many many years ago, kept coldwater, large tropicals and now reefkeeping and i would say after a very basic understanding of the ammonia cycle, most else is common sense.
idetifying diseases helps, and understanding what makes them (fish, inverts and corals) tick...

... from what i have learnt so far (and I am still a newbie!), beekeeping is similar. there is the basic keeping of the creatures, identifying diseases is helpful, but all else is advanced and optional... same as fishkeeping!

you can make it as easy or as complex as you want it to be...

What is it about beekeeping that attracts that silly pompous strain of man?

You know the type, they have an opinion on everything. They cant see anything past the end of their nose.

Beekeeping isnt difficult so if you think your the master of mankind because you keep a few bees then you are probably one of these people.

*END OF RANT*

i must say that i have met quite a few members of this forum and have yet to find a pompous one amongst them. I am sure they exist though... sometimes a typing style can be misunderstood, as can the way someone comes across in person... sometimes it is difficult to get the point across using a keyboard (and not all of us can type at 40 words a minute, so use short sharp answers)

Have to agree- I listened to a beekeeper recently who is very knowledgeable and I respect that- but his way is the only way- if you disagree?? then 'bugger off' attitude is shown by him - to all his Assoc members.

ahhh!! i presume you are refering to members on the 'other' forum! :D

I agree they are very similar and the complexities do depend on you at times, but it also depends what you are trying to achieve though.

Common sense is AWOL a lot these days (all walks of life) though which is half the problems with the world!!

Your right there are lots of courses. Mainly money making schemes where at the end of the course you end up buying all the expensive gear from the person who ran the course!

Cheeky sod!

I have 50 people coming to 3 one day courses- None will buy anything from me in the way of equipment- and those that take up bee keeping and live near enough I will mentor - at NO EXTRA COST -for as long as they feel the need to have guidance.
At the moment I am helping 5 people, and one lives 10 miles away- but I go if needed- NO CHARGE.

If you live near me- come over and say it to me in person...

Oh dear, she flies mannie, she is liable to be in Wigan before you can blink.

As for this nonsense about running courses and selling stuff to the innocents, pah, bah and humbug.

I ran evening classes for years and sold nothing.

Awa an bile yer heid chiel.

Hi Beren
I think you must have just had an unlucky experience. I went on a 10 course in 2009, cost something like £25. Got an unbelievable amount out of it. I am still using the resources I got (very detailed and very helpful...all supplied on a CD too!). The trip to the apiary was excellent too. All people running / supporting the course were both helpful, friendly and eager to please. Nobody tried to sell me anything, and a number offered to help me in my first year of beekeeping, at no cost. Every time I ask a question on this site I get helpful and very useful advice...I believe that you will find the type of person you are talking about in all walks of life, and I do not think there are a disproportionate number in beekeeping, as I said, I think you have been unlucky.

Not sure if it helps, but please do not let one bad experience upset you too much.

ps bl**dy wish beekeeping was easy for me. My other half jokingly says it's like some sort of black art, with all the differing views / methods. To begin with I got very stressed looking for the 'right' answer...I have since learnt that you can't always have what you want, so no good getting stressed about it (I mean me not you, by the way...i.e. I am not intending to make your day even more miserable)

As a newbee I would just like to voice my opinion. My first introduction to bee keeping was a one day course for £30(run by Heather].It was worth the money just for the lunch.I gained lots of info and nobody tried to sell me anything.I have since joined Brighton and Lewes Bee Keepers and everyone I have met has been helpful and supportive. Not met any pompous people yet, maybe I've been very lucky.

My experience, they aren't pompous, but a lot seem to belong to the hang 'em and flog 'em brigade and most have an eye for a bargain ( = tight fisted).

on a +ve note, they are mostly friendly and helpful.

I find that these people exist in every walk of life, particularly among hobbyists. The best course of action I find is to smile and nod, after all, as a man, they obviously know better than any 'girly'. The best bit is when they spout complete tosh and you ask the single searching question which shows they have been found out!:D

At the moment I know so little about beekeeping that I am still smiling and nodding. However, I have so far found the pomposity spread very thin.:coolgleamA:

Hi Berren
Have you been ripped off? sure sounds like it. Your original point is valid in some respects, there are a few 'I've been there done everything' PinTA but most aren't like that. The majority are extremely helpful in a friendly self depreciating way. The courses I attended were very good value for just a associate members fee of a local BKA, these include evening classes and later practical hands on classes at our teaching apiary. We also have a 'rent a hive scheme' for a very nominal fee (usually oversubscribed) hives can be purchased at the end of season if required. So not all are out to make a quick buck! Try asking your IT man to give you ten lessons for £7.00!:D
