For those of you who have enjoyed the life on a farm series (Edwardian and Victorian) and now Wartime Farm Thursday 8pm on BBC2 you may be interested to know Alex will be working with bees again this series.

The bees were a swarm I collected on the 17th June. Two days later they were ..... you will need to watch episode 4 or 5 to find out more.

Until the episode has been aired I've been asked not to give away what will be shown and what Alex is doing exactly but some of you may find it interesting. On the day they did the first lot of filming with the bees I was there as their guest out of shot filming them on my phone. I also have a funny story to tell you which could of ruined the whole days filming.

I think the episode with my bees will be aired on the 27th September or 4th Oct.

Sounds good.
I enjoy their programs, they are really interesting.
More so when there are Bees involved.
I remember them having Bees on one of their previous series 'Victorian farm' I think it was - in the days before Bee suits.

And I am doing a radio interview- much more low key- but live and for 30 minutes..... hope I don't swear about Bayer!!

Heather when is your radio interview?

and i hope they've referred to Manley for reminiscences about the good and bad years - can't remember offhand what he says, if anything, about the war years.
(and don't keep manley at work - often).

shame pains couldn't provide a bakelite nuc to be more authentic to the period!!!!

;)....probably end up on Midlands Today after filming this Friday running a careers stand for beekeeping. Hopefully not! No idea if there's anything to put in the observation hive yet as I've only one Nat hive...better have a look later.

Only a tiny local Lewes radio station...but a chance to educate Joe P re honey bee, swarms, stress the need for helpful flowers/foliage and inform about pesticide problems.
Oct 29th 2:30....but I would like to think no bee keepers were listening!! :biggrinjester:

Funny - I had been pondering about beekeeping for a while ... but it was watching this series last time bees were on (running in a swarm) that finally sold me!!! Will definitely tune in not worthy

Been asked for a little more information by a few members.

So here you go as you took the time to email me and asked so nicely.

This is where it was filmed. The white bundle is the poly nuc wrapped in a sheet whilst I transported them to the site.

mike - i presume you pixellated that out because ruth was as nature intended? (rationing etc etc) lots of blurry skin tones.

poly!!! hope that was airbrushed out:D don't you know there was a war on!!

:willy_nilly::willy_nilly::eek: You see more than needed when she was dressed a la victorienne no sign of ankle, and collar up to chin :biggrinjester:

As my old man would say - she has got a memorable face :)

Polystyrene in war-time. Hmm. Dr Who must have transported the box back in time. :)
Worth a look I think.

As an aside I've cut up a plastic Queen Excluder and stuck the bit between feed resevoir and main body on my nuc - sadly none of my swarms lasted long enough in a poly to test if it worked to keep them from building comb in there...

Hope the beekeeping is authentic to the period! My mother (82) and a farmer has been ranting over the inaccuaracy of the first two episodes. I can't bear the thought of having to listen to more ranting!
