Would 1/2" wire mesh be large to use as a mouse guard or if l was to make my own what size would l need to drill the wholes.

an alternative is to use a QX under the brood box.

Are there any disadvantages to this??

A reduced entrance with pins/nails pushed through to stop mice is easy.

Half an inch? Don't bother fitting anything at all, just as good as that size mesh! Half that size is getting there. Queen excluder size is good, but the bees will get a lot of pollen knocked off if punched metal sheet excluder material is used.

If you can get a bic biro through a hole a mouse can get through

From memory it needs to be 8mm or less with the spacing.
Some of the supliers pains have a mouse guard that is also an entrance block to just twist it round and it has 3 holes.
If you get a mouse guard and cut it in sections, you can place that section onto a entrance block with push pins.
