Interestingly there is some research showing that very short pulses of light may be good, (with a "night" period) as well, as it makes the mitchondria more productive.
 
I put mine on a timer gradually drawing the day out. On between 5pm and 7.30 pm at the moment. Trying to mimic longer days
We extend the laying day for our chooks with lights. I was always taught to put light on in early morning to wake the birds when they are on their perches. If the lights are on in the evenings and switch off leaving darkness the birds can't see their perches to go to bed.
Plants don't have that problem but perhaps sudden darkness has an effect on their physiology?
