i must say that i am very sinical due to seeing and working with many big charities in the uk and mainly in africa.

my charity donation goes to the local groups now,

scrap paper from work goes to the nursery club to scrible on and cash goes to the scout group. i try on every site i run to find out local groups and to see if the waste we are producing has a second use elswhere

Frankly, I don't give two shiney ones if you agree with me or not freethorpes.

But you should be concerned of your very much 'minority' status on this issue. I am another that thinks there is a decided aroma around some of the tricks these 'charities' get up to.

Who else, is behind Freethorpe bees on this one? Please all, come out of the woodwork.

I'm with FB.
Guide Dogs - gave a decent amount one year at work and we were forever pestered afterwards by all sorts of charities - all 'phoning and wanting donations. They had obviously sold the donor list to other charities (either that or they all swop lists).

I've worked in the charity sector for many years and it's certainly true that when charities reach a certain size they become prone to "mission creep" - they begin to forget what their original ethos was and start becoming orientated by where the next grant/donation is coming from.

I used to dnoate to the RSPCA by direct debit many years ago until I got fed up with the endless torrent of emotive begging letters that they kept sending me - please donate an extra £15 or poor old Mr. Fluffy will die.
I have also had some experience of calling them out to cruelty cases. I phoned once when I suspected that several dogs had been abandoned in a neighbours house. They told me that they only had one animal officer covering the whole of Wales that weekend and that they wouldn't be able to get there for 3 days.
A bit less spent on marketing etc, a bit more on manpower, I think.

Guide Dogs is a great charity, but their business and commercial attitudes are sometimes all wrong.

Rubbish. Exactly why should I be concerned? And who says I am in a "minority" anyway - there is a bigger world than this thread.

If you don't like what the RSPCA do, don't donate...but next time you read a cruelty horror story don't complain "why isn't someone doing something about this?....

As I have said before, there is a much bigger picture here than a few policies you don't agree with.

That's great news! But no doubt they'll spend alot of donations on appealling.

They built a new centre near my Mum in Essex and carpeted the entrance hall with plush thick pile carpet which must have cost a bomb. There was also a chandelier in said same entrance hall. Could this money have been better spent? I think so!

By the way - yes I do know this because my Mum goes there on a regular basis to help a blind chap read his mail.

Lol! Thanks for that freethorpes.

I have great respect for the guys at the water face in the RNLI but management can leave a little to be desired.
My husband is in the local mountain rescue team and they recently had a bequest with which they bought a new much needed vehicle and there was a bash for the relatives as a thank you. The bequest also included a much more sizeable sum to the RNLI and six months down the line they haven't bothered to write to say thanks.........

I'd like to add that members of charities at the sharp end are usually made of gold. The higher echelons seem to often lose sight of the original goals.
