When renewing my BBKA membership I made a point of not ticking the gift Aid box on the form, two reasons, 1. I didn't want to and 2. I think they get enough out of me without claiming from my tax.
My Brother who is self employed and only works a couple of days a week as a handyman/gardener also didn't tick the box because he has to be careful being a low earner.
having checked my receipt that I have been sent I noticed that it says I have opted for gift aid! erm, no, I didn't!

clearly when they received my form they have ticked the box for me! I will be contacting my brother to see if they have done the same to him and then the club sec or treasurer to have this rectified.

It feels like walking past a beggar on the street only to find him with his hand in my pocket! not amused!

Its my choice whether I do gift aid not theirs, I do some gift aid to worthy causes but that's because I want to

Anyone else opted out or thought they had?

If you are lucky enough to pay income tax then BBKA as a registered charity can claim additional cash from government under the gift aid scheme.
This money goes back into the BBKA coffers to help fund branches and the branches then fund beekeeping education... one hopes!

I tick the box for gift aid.. at least I know my money is going into something other than funding Trident or ridiculous state visits from would be despots!

I get how it works but surely it my choice not the decision of the BBKA club Treasurer, don't they get enough from the adopt a hive business and general subs and insurance without falsification of documents.

as you say B+ in the case of my brother it could potentially end up with him having an additional tax bill at the end of the year if he did gift aid to other charities.

maybe I'm just being a miserable git but I find it annoying to say the least.

If you don't pay enough income tax to cover it, you will be liable to HMRC for the overclaimed amount

True.... I think BBKA can claim an additional 40% over your membership fee... £13.. presumably excluding the insurance premiums, if you opt for that type of membership.

That is about an additional fiver per member.... serious dosh!

Does the gift aid form not state that member has to be a UK Tax payer, paying tax to sign?

It says the following...

Gift Aid
If you are a UK tax payer we would be grateful for your permission to reclaim the tax on all donations and means for every £1 you donate we receive £1.25 for our charity.

Then next to the check box...

I give my consent for you to reclaim tax on this donation. I am a UK tax payer paying an amount of income tax (or capital gains tax) to the level of my donation (25p of tax on every £1 that I have given).

As I didn't give my consent how do they know I am in a position to cover it?

I think it's a bit mean not to tick it if you're a tax payer - that said ticking for you is an appalling thing to do.

You've really got the wrong end of the stick on gift aid - if you pay income tax and a charity are in a position to claim gift aid then they get the tax you have paid on your donation - straight back from the Government's coffers into their's. It doesn't cost you anything and if you are a higher rate tax payer then the charity benefits from being able to claim the higher rate of tax back.

I'm no lover of what the BBKA do with our subscriptions but to be fair I would rather see the tax I pay in a charities coffers than in the Government's pot. Bit mean to deny them the addtional cash but I don't think they should be ticking boxes on the assumption you WANT to do it ... typical of the BBKA though - they are good at making uninformed decisions on behalf of their members !

But if you don't pay enough tax then ticking gift aid can come back and bite you.

###THEY are not.... and someone needs a good slap for ticking that box for you... come to think of it, this year I had 2 separate forms sent to me... one about my chosen type of membership and branch to which I belonged, together with a separate page for the gift aid bit.

Did you return both sections?

:iagree::iagree:
Lets call it what it is: falsifying a report to HMRC.
If they have decided that all the unticked boxes must me "reworked" it's conspiracy to defraud.

And at this time of year?

Everyone's having to cough-up to the Taxman, plus they (HMRC) 're asking for a down-payment on their own forecast for your earnings next year!

But if you don't pay enough tax then ticking gift aid can come back and bite you.

Presumably, if you didn't "pay enough tax" that very thing is going to catch you out.
Unless your accountant advised you to bank it in Panama? :ohthedrama:

I will take it up with the club tomorrow evening as it's the monthly meeting (if they turn up, last month it was just my brother and I) the form was just one sheet with BDI details amount payable etc then the Gift aid was at the bottom the form.

So why not strike a line through the offending words (in ink) then it covers you against alteration if push comes to shove.

It all sounds a bit crooked to me, why join and pay such a organization in the first place, all i read about the BBKA is all negative and this even more so.

You can't believe everything you read on the internet. I can't even believe the stuff I write on the internet!

It is so simple to avoid any 'cheating'. Two boxes and tick in only one of them. Any with both boxes ticked should be checked, repeated or rejected for tax relief.

Like this:

Tick one box only.
YES □
No □

Any organisation not making forms clear and unalterable are either stupid or potentially crooked. If your form can be shown to have been altered after completion, it is fraud and should be investigated.

How many others have also been cheated? How much of taxpayers money has been illegally chanelled into the wrong coffers? This is a case of potential fraud, theft and likely other issues. Get it officially investigated, is my advice.
