There is an off topic and forum related feedback section you could have posted in, unless you just thought you would be clever?
Hmm - my post was labelled Off Topic so not sure why it made you think I was trying to be clever. Just curious! I'm still chuckling at your reaction to my comments on the Courses thread. Feel free to delete the off-topic stuff. Or move it. It was just an experiment!

To sum up then:

1. in all likelihood from china (?nature of any preservative used)
2. NOT complete - need to add cost of sourcing varroa mesh plus nails/glue. (and frames/foundation).

The bees on a budget set sounds a better deal (if available)

Actually really clear instructions and parts numbered to help construction

If it has been treated I can't tell and the bees seem fine with it. Looks like, feels like and smells like Western Red Cedar.

Thanks for the clarification Rodney, looks like you've got one happy customer on here too.

rodney - are these hives made from red or white cedar?

everyone else - both red cedar and white cedar contain thujone (as in oil of wormwood ie absinthe active ingredient) which i understand has insecticidal properties!!!! interesting that it is ok for hives!!!!

Red cedar in this country is known as Cedar of Lebanon which is traditonally used to keep moths out of wardrobes and chest of drawers. Western Red Cedar is safe for bee hive use.

I think the QE is made of bamboo, never used one any thoughts if ok?
Cheers

PS cant be worse than recent plastic ones which were too narrownot worthy

rodneydavies,

Below has just been extracted from your website It is the cost for shallow's wax described as:

''National Shallow Wired Wax Sheets Foundation Super x 10
£12.99 + £5.00 shipping
In stock. Sold by Far E*st D*rect Ltd
Quantity: 1

(my substituted asterisks)

I am so sorry for suggesting earlier that this was a rip off. This must surely be the price for 110 sheets, enough for ten National supers?

Had I been buying enough wax for ten supers (110 sheets) from KBS (per eg), it would be costing me something like £66.10 inclusive VAT and carriage!

Your wax foundation is truly very cheap!! At £18 for ten supers, that is a huge saving. I would think there must be a catch in the deal somewhere, as I am rather cynical of offers which appear to be far below market value.

You wouldn't really be trying to sell just 10 sheets for £13 (bar the penny), would you? Where KBS are charging £5.15 for the same amount. (we will not consider any quality differences here)

If that is so, I would suggest you were robbing unsuspecting customers and my earlier comment was correct. If I am wrong in thinking this is the price for ten sheets you have my sincere apologies.

If this is the real truth, then your claim to be selling the wax too cheaply is utter !?>){!? or perhaps a word which I would not be allowed to use on the forum.

Please enlighten me.

I would think it's for 100 sheets Rab,cannot be for just ten, that would be more than three times the price of KBS.

I'm on this forum as i just come back to beekeeping after break of 10 years and need all the help i can get from other beekeepers willing to share their knowledge and mistakes !

May i welcome you here i hope you enjoy being here im glad your back to beekeeping.

I've had 50 frames and 50 foundation from Easipet via Ebay and very happy with quality of products and speed of delivery :) Luckily I had plenty of gimp nails spare :)

Please enlighten me.

rodneydavies.

The request (bold, above) still stands. Was it ten or a hundred sheets for 13 quid?

Is that an optimum price for fast turnaround then, just a little more than twice the price of Thornes, and three times the price of KBS....or is it some kind of special wax.

Thankyou.

The hives may be good value but the foundation most certainly is not, amounting almost to "legal mugging" of 'unknowing' customers, IMO.

My wired foundation for National shallow frames, purchased for this season, cost somewhat less than four pounds for a pack of ten sheets, so my ten packs cost somwhat less than forty pounds - and that was delivered to my door from a well known and respected supplier!

I would agree that prices have advanced since I made my purchase but effectively eighteen pounds for ten sheets seems to me to be profiteering at the expense of those that have been misled into believing the price was competitive. Could almost call it "daylight "robbery", I would think.

Listing the 'full price' as £26.99 for those ten sheets is an astounding mark-up for a product which can be found for less than a fifth of that price, even without any discount.

Certainly a case, here, of 'Buyer Beware'. I am now wondering whether the hives are really that good a deal.....

hi all

just been looking at some stuff on the above site and thought i would see if they had any new beekeeping stuff in and saw this.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/National-Be..._1_8?s=outdoors&ie=UTF8&qid=1309290533&sr=1-8

£105 was £250.

not sure think it is soft wood but could be wrong might be cedar but get lots with it what do people think?

good deal?
Well as a new bee starting out on the cheap I bought the Thornes Ebay special National for £150. This was very similar to the Amazon one. The Queen Excluder I have is a plastic one, this looks different. Yes I got the frames and varroa mesh included, but this can't be bad for someone starting out surely?

Perhaps I will live to regret buying a cheaper hive?

Just buy the hive and ignore the foundation then? Doesn't seem that hard to me but I routinely buy my kit from several suppliers depending on price/quality.
