This is what it states "in today's world the use of hives of old and non-updated designs results in dead, dying or weak bees. This coupled with confusing and argumentative information and poor maintenance leads to further trouble and bee declines.

The British National Hive or the Commercial while a good and dependable design is not in line with today's beekeeping troubles. Most notable is the inability to weather the current pests of the hive. This could also be said of other designs. I will focus on this design for this post."

Then the author goes on to make modifications such as three holes for bee escapes in the crownboard, insulation or a double wall on the north side of the hive, modifications under the top bars which would otherwise harbour small hive beetle and remove metal tops and use other coverings/coatings to stop stressing the bees and coating the inside of the hive with vegetable oil.

Other than the OMF there have been no real updates since the 60's. What are everyones comments! Polite ones please.;)

d coating the inside of the hive with vegetable oil.

Thats a bizzarre one. Wonder how experienced the author is? Maybe unaware that, although barely visible most of the time, the bees varnish the entire interior of the hive with propolis of microscopic thickness except at surface irregularities, where it is often thicker as the surface gets somewhat smoothed off.

Oil will just damage this layer, or make it hard for the bees to apply it.
