Remember Beefriendly is a scientist (like myself although I am now in education). He will not be impressed by non peer reviewed findings. Even our 11 year old students are taught to look for independence/peer review in publications of science . You clearly are from a generation that this was not on the curriculum. Not your fault but it’s common sense really. Buyer beware/be careful what the the sellers claims - they may just be intentionally, or not, be biased. Basic stuff really - really amazes me the cognitive dissonance thing coupled with keyboard warrior syndrome.
.

You have no idea of my background, my education or my ability to assimilate, digest and utilise all sources of information. I'm no keyboard warrior I just dislike seeing people who have much to offer on this forum driven off by a few people who feel they have either an intellectual superiority or a desire simply to create unpleasantness.

Talk to the wall .. I know what I (and others) have experienced using Karol's advice .. I get very fed up with you people who seek argument on an intellectual level but don't appear to have either utilised his trap or his advice.

The 'science' is to a great degree irrelevant ... if flight principles were maintained bumble bees would never fly but they do ! If it works why is there a need to question it ?

Scientists tend to work for, and produce PR. :ban:
One day something is bad for you, next week you need it more than something else.

All the 80llocks about drinking plenty of water was derived from "research" sponsored by Pierre! :bump:
Although, why all the gym-nuts have to carry round plastic bottles of something that's readily available & fresher straight out of the nearest tap defies cognitive process.

By the way now you're in education, what are they teaching you?
Have you looked at his ‘evidence’ on his website?
No,
Do you have a link?

I don't know anything about Karol or his device, so I'm not joining that little tiff.

No scientist of any merit would state that bumblebees can't fly, so I guess that Magnan was arguing that flight theory was wrong and he has been quoted out of context. But that's just my take on it.

To determine how it works. When we know how stuff works, we can use that knowledge to improve designs and invent new stuff. That's how a lot of science works.

From DEFRA

On 3 July 2019, the first UK sighting of an Asian hornet of the year was confirmed in New Milton, Hampshire. It was spotted by a member of the public and reported via the Asian Hornet Watch App. This was the first confirmed sighting since October 2018.

Curious how this first informational post turned to "bickering" within ?x? posts.

Yes me too, its why I hardly look in these days, still fingers crossed, heads in the sand it will all be ok,...............maybe that's what they thought in France a few years ago.

Heads in the sand?
Maybe it’s just bravado.
Nothing that a little fipronil won’t fix in time ?
Not everybody wants to run around being collectively proactive in chasing down the threat but those that do are doing a good job.

How can you type this and have any credibility. Science is to a great degree irrelevant. OMG.

If it works why is there a need to question it ?

Again missing the point so blatantly it is not funny anymore. The question is do these traps work better than other much much cheaper or indeed free traps? This would then justify there massive mark up price because they work better. This is why the science is critical to assess this point properly.

Of course some scientific hypothesis change so have to be modified to fit the new evidence - thus people readjust there working hypothesis. We do not have a complete correct answer for everything - evidence will be used to adjust and better understand our findings. That is why I try to inspire our youngsters that science is dynamic and exciting rather than simply knowledge in a textbook. Some things in the textbook may not actually be fully correct - its are best working hypothesis at the time.

But the scientific method of analysis cannot ever be disputed ever; unless you are a complete maverick. That's why new research and hypothesis will try to find out why and how bumble bees fly.

Please have a rethink about this. You are just wrong on this - this is not arrogance but basic facts.

You are very much behaving like a keyboard warrior on this one, if you are willing to type such arrant nonsense. The treads of irony through this is staggering.

Clearly the issues I have pointed out about Karol's behaviour don't seem to matter to you - but complain is several posts, about other forum member whose behaviour is poor towards people you like - again frighteningly inconsistent and pointless carrying on.

You will ignore all facts and type away to cover up the fact you cannot accept you need to reassess your position.

I however distrust people who are sly and and underhand whoever they are and whatever their view.

PS
I have gathered your age from the plethora of posts you give so my point about what curriculum you received at school is factually correct.

The fact you cannot analyse the facts about waspbane is very strong evidence you have no idea how to analyse research data. Again factually correct.

But I fed up with it now so if it makes you happy;

You win and are absolutely vindicated.

Let's leave it there - people are free to believe whatever they like in a free society - Flat Earth society anybody & Climate change denial spring to mind.

Well .. you clearly like to try and win an argument and it would appear that there are a few points you are also missing:

1. Karol's advice about wasp behaviour has been vindicated as far as I am concerned by personal observation and experience. There are a number of others within this thread who have agreed.

2. I have never suggested that there are not cheaper designs (or even home made ones) that will catch wasps .. the ones that catch, but allow release of some wasps, are worse than useless but I have one that is made from a couple of PET bottles and some nozzles from mastic cartridges that is very effective but.. not everyone can be bothered and your objection that they should pay what YOU consider to be excessive amounts for what is a product that also works appears to me to be very strange. A Rolls Royce does the same job, effectively, as a Ford Focus, Rolls Royce makes a sizeable annual profit for their owners and the product is very expensive. Should we deny those who choose to spend their money on something that you appear to consider poor value the opportunity to buy what they wish ? Your leanings appear to more towards the Marxist tendencies ?

3. I argued, principally, about the way that Karol was hounded on here - by a number of people - I felt his treatment was deplorable. His advice works, his trap (and others of a similar high efficiency design) work .. I don't feel the need to question the science behind it as it appears to me to be a proven system.

4. My education or academic qualification has nothing to do with this - simply belittling me on the basis of what you 'think' about my age and curriculum exposure does not enhance your position .. more, I think, it just indicates a massive insecurity on your part.

I'm glad that you've taken the opportunity to read my posts ... please continue to enjoy them .. I would never wish to restrict anyone's freedom to read and make up their own mind about the validity of my opinion.

Google it about fourth hit - but here I've done it for you.

Not going to waste time on the rest of this.

I'm still waiting for someone to show me how you get three tons of insect biomass inside a nest the size of a football. Which is one the many erroneous facts our "expert" tells us.

I must admit .. I could never get my head around that but I was swayed by the maths when it was pointed out that extrapolated over the entire life of the wasps nest and the usage of the energy it became a more manageable figure.

Still incomprehensible though.

What I do know is that wasps can be a real pest and the numbers are escalating early this year ...

Yep starting to see a few here too - I like the Millet tunnel entrance - have you tried them?

r ...

The few peer reviewed papers done in New Zealand put the figure at around 15kg . A more comprehensible and believable estimate.
Worth noting nests in parts on New Zealand are active 365 days of years, so big overcalculation for UK.

No .. I use Paynes poly hives and not that easy to modify them .. I have to admit I don't get a massive wasp problem in my home apiary .. BF is right - strong colonies can usually defend themselves, the problem comes with weak colonies and nucs.

I will be putting out my wasp traps but not until I see them sweet feeding. At present they are mainly after the dead bees around the hives for protein - they weren't even interested in some of the remaining vestiges of honey when I was feeding my wax melter. But.. there's a lot about this year. Very different to last year.

Sweet feeding already here, have found them drowned in feeders, robbing supers, and pestering anytime I open a hive.
High or low efficiency traps, various entrance types, strong colonies etc if the wasp problem is severe enough none of them will be effective 100% individually.

Blimey sorry to hear that - you must be in a wasp paradise. I really only get problems with weak nucs.

For Millets tunnel entrances no hives need need modifying. You just need to make the tunnel entrance that slides into the entrance gap. Means the bees now emerge half way into the hive...but the wasps don't.
Ingenuously simple and very effective.

Not heard anything more on this 'outbreak'. Did anyone get sight of the DNA test results?
