never volunteer :p

i was asked to volunteer to help move three old association hives and a nuc with other committee members to an new association apiary

so out of 8 committee members only one other member turned up, first trip all when ok, second ,third all ok

that just left the nuc , so we got it to the new site and " blast" or similar anglo saxon words not printable here because it falls apart ( cheap chipboard type), bees and bee pooh everywhere,,

moral: never reused those cheap Nucs made of chipboard your bees often come in, just throw them away

ok don't panic ,new hive from the association shed ,blocked out with dummy, queen frame in ,stores in (small 1" square patch of larva), scraped up the bees, all in,,,,,,,,,ahh stung on the neck through the veil as it was all srunched up as i knelt down to scoop up more bees

so first day of the new year, first sting :willy_nilly:

and to cap it all, as i had no piriton or sudafed ( i find they work better for me) the first chemist refused to sell me any sudafed tablets as it was not supposed to be used for bee stings, he did not get my trade

moral: never volunteer

great start to the new year, hope it gets better, and better wash all the bee pooh of the suit, it stinks of it

Oh poor you, but well done for volunteering
Your post has made me feel better though..........?

My plywood nuc box that the chickens have turned into a hidey hole has always made me feel guilty for not clearing it away to be used again, now I know that would have been unwise, and its best place was in the mud with the chickens.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom:conehead:
Happy new year

My plywood nuc box that the chickens have...

Plywood should be much better than chipboard; after all, some including me, have complete beehives made mostly of the stuff.

lol, did you see any new brood in the Nuc? :)

OUCH - I was stung in the neck once and ended up in hospital ! Lucky Escape !

I didn't know Sudafed worked on beestings ?!

S

well at least the sting ,keeps up my immunity to the stings over the winter

sudofed was recommned by my doctor and is to be taken with a piriton type antihistamine

the sudofed ingrediatiant pseudoephedrine hydrochloride releases stored noradrenaline, so bit like a mini epipen, it stops shoc and increases blood pressure

"small 1" square patch of larva"

so that answers the question posed in another thread.

as the larvae were obviously easily visible whilst trying to hurredly reassemble hive contents then they were obviously a decent size SO must've been laid 7-9 days ago.

That corresponds to right after mid winter!!!!!

I just read that out to my wife, who is a GP, and she raised a very sceptical eyebrow. She reckons the piriton is a good idea for bee stings but described using pseudoephedrine as "Heath Robinson"

What do I know? I'm a physicist!

My wife has a bsc and phd in physics and says I am still off my head lol I say its all to do with pheromones lol

I got stung on the inner thigh when I went over to do my oxalic.

one of the hives has had a bird tapping on the entrance block which had obviously put the bees in a bit of a defensive mood. as I walked around the hives a couple of bees came out to meet me, one of them was walking around on my leg and as I was moving about I must have crushed her between my legs, so she stung me :(

that has been a bit sore for a few days now, but interestingly, when I've had a drink, it has really itched like buggery where it hasn't too badly during the day

OUCH - I was stung in the neck once and ended up in hospital ! Lucky Escape !

I was stung on three separate occasions last year, twice on the back of the neck and once on the chest.

The two on the neck resulted in quite an adverse reaction, intense itching and lumps all over my body. The one on the chest didn't result in anything more than a typical localised reaction.

I always have a box of Piriton in the car now, just in case.

I got a New Year gift from a friend's bees yesterday too.....
Got tagged on the wrist when one of the girls crept down the cuff of the gloves i was wearing and stung me through the bee jacket. :(
