A company called Wiggly Wigglers sells:

I emailed them to check the fire lighters are indeed pollutant free, as they sound ideal for a smoker. They replied that their supplier couldn't tell them, but had been approached by beekeepers in the past.

Anyone used them? Any opinions? (Yes, of course there are...)

I found a lovely old tree which has been rotting away for goodness knows how long and the insides are almost powdery.

It makes wonderful cool smoke if the smoker is lit.. which happily these days is more for show then requirement.

'Bout as good as kindling made with old unusable/unrepairable beehive frames, only with extra embedded energy to convert the wood to dust!. No, on second thoughts, not even (at least no preservatives, etc on frame wood kindling).

Anyone come across unnatural wood? Either it is wood, or isn't, I would have thought.

The reply (and the advertising hype) leaves plenty to be read between the lines. Typical response, that. 'Approached by beekeepers' (... but not progressed any further). Etc, etc.

(bee) careful because we use a product used by companys to make fire lighters, guees what its called odourless kero as you have quoted so be careful as it is a fuel also for bbq etc

I'd have thought a 'good firelighter' would produce flames rather than smoke - not really what you want in your smoker (unless you have a particularly vicious colony!)

I use Wiggly Wigglers - but only for my wormery.
Like PH I have a lovely dead and rotted tree. Hoick out lumps of wood- dry off in the greenhouse and use when necessary - FREE

A short walk in any wood is going to produce a bag of the right rotten (punk) wood, so why bust a gut looking at a product when the stuff is all around and free?

I use plain cardboard egg cartons (the uncoloured ones) torn up and mixed with dried rosemary clippings in my smoker. Smells good, produces a cool smoke and the bees seems to be less agitated by it than the shredded cardboard I used before.

The wax they are dipped in will be paraffin wax I expect.

dead wood, walnut leaves, egg boxes, lavender trimmings, pelleted grass feed (molasses free)... the list is endless. No need to buy fuel or lighters.

However the big question you should ask yourself is....

why have you not been buying up enough goodies from the big beekeeping suppliers? You can never have enough kit.

I have a big box full of the shredded packing cardboard from Maisemore.



Perhaps you can make good in the Tho*nes online winter sale!!!!

And IF you need to use smoke... put a little grass in the spout to ensure no sparks are ejected when you puff... and fill the spout with grass when finished to preserve your fuel for next time
