I did a 200+mile round trip to USK today to collect some Western Red Cedar. took SWMBO with me. It cost me £50 in the garden centre for patio pots and another £20+ for lunch and tea. I am going to have to place a levy on each hive I make for my colleagues to pay for the trip!!!!!

How much was the WRC... ?

17 roofs down... 23 to go!... then 40 National OM Floors.

Sedum plants for the ( New workshop's) roof growing well in the pollytunnel... looks like we will need to take a lot more cuttings!

20 lengths at 1.2m X180mmX20mm for making roofs came to £55. This will make 10 roofs. Of course you have to add the cost of the top, a waterproof aluminium covering, screws, glue and an inner rail. £6.50 per roof.
The wood is quite wet and rough sawn so has to be put through the planer and allowed to dry.
Similarly enough timber to construct 10 14X12 brood boxes, side walls, rails etc came to £135.60. about £15.00 all in, per box.
This is excellent WRC and has the added benefit of giving me something to do in the workshop, away from SWMBO and the out-laws over winter.
I had some other pieces to build 10 floors and other bits and bobs and the whole lot cost me £205.56. The addition of SWMBO lunch and shopping pushes up the overall price , but what is the value of peace and quiet!!! A very pleasant day out across the Cotswolds and through the Forest of Dean and Wye and Usk valleys.
You have to order in advance and a lead time of about a fortnight is required.

Just made up the BB' s and supers I bought in the January sales. The price of the BB's were about the same as Brian reckons his out at ( but mine were standard deeps) and all perfectly good even if they were seconds. I did not have the fun he had from his woodworking, but then my skills are obviosuly not up to his. I can manage the flat packs OK and enjoy putting them together.

Me too... think I will give the WRC a miss as the price I got standard broods for was a good 25% under the cost of buying in timber... even if sawn to size!

Maisies 2nd sale WRC Nat std Brood quality was far superior to Thrones and better machined... plus did not have fiddly plastic runners that have to be removed and replaced during the annual scorching!!

Hi,
your adding £6.50 per roof onto the cost of the wood, that £6.50 includes the "waterproof aluminium covering", may I ask where are you getting that?

I've tried to price aluminium sheeting but it's coming in quite a bit more than you costings!

I was getting a sheet of Ally for £20... cut and bent... enough for 8 roofs.
The firm I used has been taken over by some government quango... so no more!
Waiting for more ally caravans to be abandoned on the A30 this summer as the grokkles /emmets/ people from up country abandon their tow along toys!
Last years crop were mostly plastic... don't make them like they used to!!

Caravan aluminium sheeting, good idea, I wonder if caravan dealers would have a source for that sheeting for the owners that find mysterious square holes in the sides of their caravans...?
