Not the weather for me to earn income tax this week so spent it converting a shed into a honey house. Floor, walls and roof insulated and the floor boarded out ready for vinyl. Should be picking up some dairy board in a couple of weeks for the walls and ceiling

Whats diary board?

Should Western Red Cedar Brood Boxes for National Hives need to be be painted?
If so what with?

Paint's duty is to protect wood against rain, dirt and sun. Wood wracks in the sun, and in the rain...

I have been in England, and I wondered how much raw wood had green algae.

Raw wood will have soon miserable outlook.

As per Anduril. If yo decide to paint make sure it is " breathable" . When Cuprinol clear was branded as being harmless to bees I bought in a stock, and give the hives ( cedar) a lick every few years. Major suppliers sell beehive paints and stains/ preservers . Others on here use, I think it is called, Cuprinol shades. Personal choice.

Thankxxs
Looked at the Cuprinol shades as the boxes would look pretty if painted and noticed that a lot of English beekeepers paint their boxes.

Where can I buy a branding iron to mark my boxes and other equipment as I believe theft is a problem here?

Thrones do one. Made my own from a brass headed golf club I found laying about in some scrap. Using an angle grinder and drill and files carved my initials in that. Works a treat.

Tunnel entrance

Last week I received the latest Thornes catalogue. A new item is a plastic tunnel entrance block to deter robbing, which fits on a standard entrance block.
Had some old square plastic electrical conduit in my shed and have made three .
Saved myself £21. Only took about an hour. They look just like the picture in the catalogue. The cap of the conduit will be screwed to the entrance block, and the square conduit can just be slid on and off as needed to make the tunnel.

That's why I like this forum, what a good idea, now where did I put that old conduit????
Thanks
Just had a thought, how about cutting the front facing bit in half so you can open it by sliding the halves either way and close it by pushing them together. Won't lose the front bit then!

That's a brilliant mod. Thanks enriko. I will try it out on one of them first. The conduit was only 1.5 cm square ( what I had laying about), so I had to modify one of the sliding rails a bit to ensure the tunnel was big enough for easy bee passage, but your idea will still work. Had the conduit been 2cmx 1.5 would have been much less work.

OMF's with UFE

Knocked up a couple of new open mesh floors with underfloor entrances out of cedar off cuts today.

Been converting mine to underfloor entrances in readiness for the Asian Hornet's invasion!
Wish there was something we could manufacture to deal with this small hives beetle.
I can only foresee APHA bringing in similar find and destroy protocols for beekeepers similar used to control of AFB and EFB.
With cedar boxes to least they can be torched.
