Took Arran for his first inspection of the year this afternoon. He got to use his new suit for the first time, and I have to say,I am very impressed with the quality of it! Beautiful made!

Both hives doing well. Hive 2 really strong. We want to perform a demarree on them, but the weather looks too cold for the next week or two. They are on the brink of swarm preparations. Opinions?

The usual stuff, if there is still a surplus of winter stores there remove and give them some foundation, if they look crowded add a super, give a frame of brood from the strongest to the weakest.

How strong is really strong - if it's touching eight frames BIAS I'd wait for the first bit of OK weather and go for it. as long as it's not torrential rain it's doable

Errrmmm.

Excuse me!

Has anyone seen how Kazmcc has updated her information?

I just want to point out to the sub-committee comprising JBM, Redwood, ericA and chaired by the aforementioned Kazmcc, that I still claim ownership of this hive.

And we will so exactly what I decide.

Which is, to do a Demarree just as soon as we get decent enough weather to do so!

So there!

Dusty

Yeh yeh yeh ... very brave when she's not looking !! You should know by now who is really in charge, you just think you are ... only a matter of time and you'll be toeing the line !

Managed to find 10 frames of brood, things are finally picking up here. Loaded up the cell builder, on an already strong colony, that has no swarm cells and contains a strong queen from last year. will be grafting in 7 to 9 days. At last!! weather due to dip next week, so after then warming up for grafting week by the looks of things. It does help!!

while cutting up wood to burn some frames ... i hit my hand with an axe, got a way with just a deep cut and a 4 hour wait in A&E...must remember to use the right tool for the job next time :)

A close shave is a good wakeup call ... better a near miss than losing a finger or two ....

Two of mine are like this,i just put the empty deep below the old brood box to give them extra room and will perform the demarree when the weather improves

More and more colonies on 3 boxes.. 12-14 frames of brood so far - brood frames with less, moderate, or none arches of stores within. These are ones which worthy something after the sales. Preparing for qrearing..
Seems black ash and maples are generous with nectar.. Even frosts were.. Prognosis in further grimm... Some even mention snow.. Seems nothing of black locust forage will be.. "Luckily" have stock of couple barrels of 1st class black locust from previous season.. No one want to buy, and I won't gift it for misery on my own will..

Rats!! I'd have got away with it too if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

It's really scary when you have an accident like this....it brings it home to you how vulnerable we are. I hope you are soon recovered and back to normal...but with more caution!

A lovely day here...10 days since the last inspection and 9 days since my hive swap. All is well. The swapped hives are fine...the nuc is increasing and the donating colony has held its own. My other 2 colonies are a little bigger despite the poor weather. Even some nectar being stored...yay!
Having to climb over a fence to get into the Bee Yard as the old garden fence with the gate in it was removed and a new fence put up. OH hasn't completed the rest of the new fencing so we can't take down the old fence or else the dogs will go awol. I'm getting too old to climb over fencing...I want a gate!....the nagging commences...

Gate? A pallet and some baler twine required!

We did the demaree today on hive 2. No messing. Such lovely bees to work with. Spotted a green pollen bee again. It's really nice to see a thriving colony at work.
