Ha ha...we have a number of 'safe places' in our house....mostly it is the OH glasses and keys which are found there!

Spotted a local bee farmer going through his hives today. Was reading 6.5 degrees on the car outside temp.
So much to the guidelines!
It just shows when you've got a business and a tight schedule you just have to get on and do that inspection come rain or shine.

A fishing umbrella comes in handy

Just returned from the apiary - T. 5C - yet the bees were flying, not busy but quite a few! No pollen - unlike recent warmer days. Forecast for the next week is cool and damp - I despair.

Congrats JBM. The OP. worked then? Just think of all the QC's you'll find this year.

:party::winner1st:

:D

yes still early days but the op went well - the right eye seems to be as good as the left which means I have more or less 20/20 vision. because I now have a fixed focus I had a choice of being short sighted and wearing spectacles for everything apart from reading or be neutral sighted and need specs for reading and nowt else - the only concern I had was whether I'd need specs for beekeeping. Still have to wait for the eyes to settle down but I think I can cope without (unless I fancy another crack at grafting :D) so far, spotted queens fairly easily (although with quick inspections I'm doing at the moment I wasn't looking for them) brood from the smallest up but today was the first chance to see if I could spot eggs.

Yes, but still delaying here partly because of the weather and partly because if there's anything wrong there's nothing much I can do. I've seen no drones, so new queens will be a while yet.

Well., sadly, the predicted warm day on the Costa del Fareham did not materialise .. cloudy, it barely struggled to make 9 degrees and witha chill wind it felt a lot colder. The bees are flying well despite the temperature and a lot of water collecting at my pond going on .. it's lovely and clear at present after all the wet weather and we cut the loostrife down a few weeks ago so the bees use the cut stems to wick water up - clever little devils aren't they. Sat watching them for half an hour haviing a warm drink and thawing out after several hours up a ladder getting my house ready to paint.

The promised sunshine seems to have slipped to Monday and Tuesday so an inspection tomorrow is looking less than likely ... might have to be an afternoon inspection next week at some point. Best laid plans ...

Seen quite a few queen bumbles looking for a home today .. always a good sign that spring is on it's way and my garden cherry tree is just starting to break bud ... nearly there I think !

packing in beekeeping gona start keeping penguins, bitter cold today with snow showers.
did nothing in the apiary struggling to get excited bout the coming season :banghead:

Check the miller feeder on a shook swarm and topped it up,

Then I checked a dying hive that on first inspection 14 day ago had smaller than grapefriut size brood and thought too small to turn around and expand, It now had just a cup full of bees, unmarked scrub looking queen, no live brood.

Despite being fed neopol pollen pattie and insulated it had not expanded , From the look of the hive they had tried to superceded the queen too late last year

Forecast is for a warm weekend down here with a settled period of high pressure for the first part of next week, but after that it looks like more frontal weather coming in which is not good news ...I'd get your bee suit washed and ready as you might miss an opportunity for a quick whisk through ...
My bee suit was washed and ready by the end of last year, but still hasn't been used in 2016.

I wish those forecasters would be more accurate because there's been rain then hail here today, with a bitterly cold wind. It's already frosty, so the blossom that's starting to appear is likely to be ruined. :smash:

Don't be too fed up. Better they be delayed and be good quality and with a tested queen, than be 'made up' of random frames from random colonies with an untested queen shoved in just to meet a time schedule.
