-50 c  this morning but by 12 dinner time the sun was up and the bees where very active, when the mole hills around my hive location defrosted i planted a load of bee friendly seeds in them.

Here are the bees begging for candipollen Finman..

One hive was a bit light although I had fed it fondant, so I checked it - they were clustered too far from the fondant, so I moved it over the cluster. I also caught a few bees to use in the microscopy course, although I wasn't happy about dropping them into the freezer - the sacrifices they have to make in the interests of science!

Moved 3 hives from Caerphilly mountain to my new out apiary at a farm. They are now closer to home and easier for me to visit.
One hive felt quite light and will need the feed topping up in the next few days.
Farmer John came out to see his new bee tenants arriving. Think he is rather excited. He is retired now but lived there since he was a boy and this is the first time that bees have been on the farm.

Moved one of my garden hives over to farmer johns. Just keeping one hive at home - my buckfasts from hivemaker - cos they are so well behaved.

Then just one more hive to be moved to the farm - from a local garden. Hope to do that next weekend.

Been a long time waiting to get this sorted.

Peeked under the roofs of two hives to check the fondant, one has started to eat it and the other hasn't touched it yet.

Bitter northeast wind today with frequent snow showers, snowdrops out and crocus, bees were flying yesterday, tightly clustered today. Brood rearing must be underway March is going to be critical this year i think

Gave 2nd round of fondants to needed ones..
Non direct bee related also finished pruning of hazels..
I am in worry for the plants this season. Hazels start to open leaf buds, one plum started to flower, peaches already have light purple buds ( will flower in a days), pear buds also cracking.. Just to get bigger picture, frost here last till beginning of May.. This warm spel has bad influence on plants.

In the apiary. Today?? It was -28˚F here this morning. Mt. Washington, over in New Hampshire, was -40˚...F or C. The same at that temp.

So, nothing today in the apiary but some shivering bees. In expect first pollen about the first week of April.

That's winter

Here not just first pollen, nectar from cornel, forest willow, wild forest flowers.. I look but still scratch my head how it will end.. Maybe queen rearing in March?! Brave new climate changes.. Accelerating..

Popped up to the Carreg apiary for a quick check - hefted hives, getting little lighter so may need a top up in a few weeks but so far all colonies are happy with their own stores - well worth giving them ample feed in the autumn.
A few bees mooching around outside but too cold for anything serious

been to feed bees got all fondant ready kitted up lifted roof off first hive and it started to snow heavy lasted 15 min managed to get them done

There was a very strong El Nino this winter, which has now weakened dramatically. All of the UK is now very cold, even Heat Island. We had real spring conditions a week or so ago and all sorts of plants are caught short; back to real winter now.

I spent all weekend cleaning and painting my poly nucs. It is a little worrying how much I like poly nucs.

Had a nice that hasn't made it this winter, so cleaning that out today. Looks like it just wasn't big enough to make it through. Plenty of stores left, a bit of mould on the tiny number of bees left. No signs of disease. Should have combined them to another hive really - but hindsight is always 20/20.

Had our second delivery from Thornes today, more supers from their sale, yet to open the box but I hope they are as good as the previous ones.

Had a but of a micro climate here today and it was fairly warm in the sun around nine to ten degrees, bees flying from all three of my colonies bringing in pollen, checked for stores, all okay but Nuc actively producing brood so added feed as its a bit light.

Ordered 2 poly hives and a Nuc plus frames etc in readiness for the new season.
