What did you do in the Apiary today?

Bees flying well some bringing in tiny amounts of white pollen
Some of mine are.
There is some Hazel out in the sheltered hedgerows and Hellebores in the garden

Could still be holly as there are still some out here, but not in a quantity now for the bees to bother with. They are on the prunus now, but first lot is wet and have gone over. Seems to be a second lot of buds so can we please have a bit of sunshine?

Nothing doing here today in the apiary as we have had 28 to 36 mph winds and are in a terrible wet mist. I did go down to the apiary to check the bee shed hadn't blown away and was still intact after the 45mph winds we had up here yesterday - it was ok.

I have been in the garage this afternoon moving all my National long hives back in a pile out of the way, after I'd spent the last week or two Danish oiling them, as I have a new compressor coming tomorrow so I've tiding up the work benches ready to get the air nailer going on the 172 new 14 x 12 frames for my long hives that I need to knock up plus the 5 frame supers I'll be using on the top of the long hives.

About 10C today and the bees were busy across all three hives for quite a few hours. Yellow and white pollen going in.

Somebody remind me which month we're in!

Looked at the three Poly Nucs we have, condensation in two of them, so we placed a cocktail stick under the perspex cover to allow a little ventilation. Checked the fondant on a hive we have in an out apiary (our bonkers hive) knowing what they are like we both suited up and as we walked to the hive one single bee flew straight to my gloveless hands and stung me! Little bast@@d, my brother had gloves on! There was plenty of fondant left, but why are they so bloody nasty to me! lol

Ooooooooh dangerously close to matchsticks.....how brave do you feel?

Checked on the hives today and all flying strong in the mild weather and a couple bringing back some good pollen loads. All the hives are now indicating an increase in brood cappings on the inspection boards. A couple with slightly more varroa than I am happy with. On the whole very happy and if things continue mid March early April could be very busy.

Not in the apiary but during a paddle on the Trent near stone I noticed a wild/ feral colony active in the warm temps. Made a mental note of their location and will keep an eye on them

If they are the Paynes poly nucs they need more top insulation, four lugs sliced off and 50mm kingspan bonded on works well to stop condensation, plus foamed open mesh floor recess.

Nooooooooooo we were concerned with the amount of condensation, a little ventilation was needed! lol

Little ventilation needed when mesh floor is open?

In Finland, when we need to dry something, we use to add heat, not ventilation. It means that keep hive room tight and ventilation proper.

Air dryes up even if condensation happens in cold surfaces. You see it in you car windows or at home.

If you want to avoid condensation in car windows, when you start, keep first the heating off and let the engine warm up. When engine is hot, then put the heating on. - nothing to do with hive.

My nucs have an eke above the brood filled with sheepswool insulation and then the roof. Next winter I want to make some celotex fillers for the ekes with a hole to take a tub of fondant when necessary.

Ah...you got the weather we had yesterday.
Wow that is a lot of frames...how many long hives?

On the contrary, ventilating when Insulated risks dehydration. Add further insulation to move the condensation to the side walls and seal the joints with tape to prevent vapour loss.

Exactly ! It's no wonder the bee stung him ... I'd be bloody annoyed if someone took the roof of my house at this time of the year and propped it up with a brick to let the heat out !! Must have read his mind....

15.5 degrees here today.

Went to apiary to 2nd Vape colonies, Incredible !!

Bees bombing in and out in large numbers on all colonies many with heavy pollen loads... Incredible !!!

polynuc condensation

I haven't had a problem with condensation. My polynuc is doing well. I left the empty feeder on then the roof. The polyfeeder is quite thick polystyrene. Saved me a job. I cut kingspan for my hives. I bought a polyhive in the winter sales because I have been impressed with the nuc.

Don't you think vaping when the bees are so active is defeating the object ?

I think the bees absent while the hive is closed up will soon pick up oxalic acid crystals.
Of more concern to me would be the hordes of bees trying to get in for the time the entrance is closed.
