What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's only going to be there for a few days and then removed when the amalgamation is complete.
I'm sure if poly nucs had removable floors then they would have been used in preference instead of something that is a perfect fit for the adaptor board for a a Nuc into National amalgamation.

You can actually buy the components off Maisimore to make up a removable floor nuc. https://www.bees-online.co.uk/detai...r-Commercial-Poly-Nucleus-Open-Mesh-FloorThey should really do the nuc as a package, could be quite useful.

My last newspaper unite though involving a nuc I transferred into a spare brood box first and then reunited, saved making up a board.

I didn't have to make up the board a kind gentleman loaned it to me.
Shouldn't be long before the nuc is out the way and they're one big happy family (or if they do to my GM queen what they've done to Colin's they'll be one big angry family).

Not really one for self-congratulatory posts, but today received an e-mail from the National Centre for Hydrology and Ecology to let me know my samples have been received for analysis. One of the very many things rounding off a mad-busy month as the season comes to an end - 4/5 weeks which have seen:

- a late swarm capture from a neighbouring property (non est mea culpa, guvvnor)
- another, final, 90lb of honey come from my 3 production colonies this year (200lb in total) - not a bad haul, considering my stated aim this year was expansion, which I have achieved, finishing with 10 colonies; 8 of which are strong and queenright
- me secure a place for my honey on the shelf of a rather nice city centre deli
- the harvest of my first ever cut comb honey - with the bees having drawn the comb from starter strips I made from last year's cappings wax
- the jarring and sale of my first ever wedding favours
- me get a bit more involved in the local association, including helping and demoing at the Bee Tent at two local shows
- me passing my BBKA Basic, with a Credit - paving the way for me to start my modules next year
- ... and probably loads of other stuff, too

Phew !!

I know pride comes before a fall and all that, but loving it at the moment. The girls get their second dose of Apiguard at the weekend, with feeding to follow.

Starting feeding yesterday and Ivy flow is now on no wonder the girls have a spring in their step today. Oh and took the MAQS off yesterday too. Surprisingly little varroa, but I am still monitoring the drop.

Went through my lot for the last time this year. I run double brood and tend not to harvest from the brood boxes. All are good for stores, except one, which is my one and only poly, so this is the only one needs feeding. Two hives to be combined tomorrow. Bees working the ivy like mad. All the nucs containing this years queens are doing nicely, but will need a feed. I will overwinter them in their wooden boxes in a block with insulation and plastic sheet round the outside

One of the hives in my back garden seem to have a favourite place to dump dead wasps. I watch them dragging them out of the hive and fly carrying them a few feet before dumping them in one specific place on a paving slab. The bees in the adjacent hive seems to dump bodies of dead workers, drones and wasps at random all over the garden.

wax moth pupa wandering around in the lid above the crownboard

Popped the lid off a double brood hive this morning as giving them some of this thymol winter sugar syrup for nosema via a rapid feeder.

Noticed two wax moth pupae wandering on the lid above the perspex crownboard.

Never seen that before ... dont think I have a wax moth issue as I checked this hive 10 days ago and they are going great guns (and working the local ivy)

Guess we know that most hives live with wax moth and these two had escaped the bees and were hiding up in the lid !

Went to feed a couple of my colonies that were getting short of stores last weekend. Beaten to it by the ivy that appears to have started up a flow - I'll leave them to it before starting syrup feeding!

Forecast is good the next few days so hopefully they'll get a lot of winter stores packed in this next week or so.

I stopped autumn feeding 3 weeks ago to prevent hive full of honey. On re-weighing today, most were % % or so lighter.. a comment on teh past weather which has been vile here.

Yep - had a concerned call off one person I mentor this morning, worried that there was robbing at her apiary as the bees were going bonkers, she sent me a video - bees on a foraging mission, loads of bees nectar bound and ivy pollen coming in

Checked the new Abelo ashforth feeder after work tonight. I'd guess I filled to about 8 litres and there's not much left now. I think they should be good now but I'm well pleased with the 10 litre feeder. Will have to get another for my other poly hive.
Now to get a bigger pan for mixing MORE syrup!
