3 buckfast Denmark island mated queens arrived, would have been nice if they had given a heads up, been like that for years though. Will be making nucs up after dinner tonight

:iagree:
Last year mine took syrup happily up here right until mid November when the weather turned 'properly".
Bees seem to favour real nectar, then syrup (artificial nectar) and then honey in that order!

I'll start feeding the colonies that need it when the Ivy flow is weakening - usually about Mid October ... they really get a good deal from the Ivy where I am, rarely have to give them much more than a top up if anything at all.

There's still pollen and nectar coming in down here .. nowhere near winter yet. I've still got my supers on !

Yes now also appear to be sticking lids to a piece of card, you go to pull card off and sliding lid pings off as well, nucs made up and queens sitting on mesh on crown board.

Getting the last of the supers off before the girls start filling them with ivy honey.....
except for one apiary in a walled garden with the walls covered in ivy that is just about to break out of bud.... 10 supers of ivy honey will do!

Nothing, but took a spin to our local market town to exchange some packages for cash with some outcomers in the car park before sitting down to coffee with them.
A rendevous I've been hoping for and looking forward to for some time. things are almost right with the world again :D

Went this morning to have a look at two new apiary site's the one was nr leominster the other near the skirid mountain . Both look good for next year. I need to find out if there's other beekeepers with apiarys near by.
I was planning to down size because of recent events but .... I've some sort of beekeeping bug so I'm told and I love it!
It's not an illness per-say but is a money swinderling hobby I can't get away from .

:sifone: time...
Congrats.
Looks like a nice Buckfast queen...you'll have more honey than you know what to do with next season.

Checked my colonies today, getting ready for winter. Haven't checked them for a number of weeks.

One, with a 2019 GM queen who had been introduced in late June and had been laying nicely, had a big, fat daughter walking around the hive as well. Seems quite soon for supercedure.

Popped original queen into a poly nuc for the winter, and left new queen in the hive. Will see how she gets on.

Also, only saw 1 wasp flying in the apiary. My traps, though, had quite a few in them. Totally different from last year where it was a wasp war.

Took the last of the supers off today, pretty disappointed as they haven't added anything to the supers since the end of july even though there's a lot of balsam being worked. Still been a good year for me overall with around 600lbs of honey and 150 cut combs taken from 12 hives. Shook out one that had a badly failing queen (~80% drone brood in worker cells)Lots of uncapped honey in the supers but not many bees in there to cap it all so took off what passed the shake test and nadired the rest,is it common for bees to store honey without capping it before winter?
