Just viewed your little Vid..
I fed two colonies 2:1 sugar syrup a few day's..the next day i had the same happen as i have before..the bees come out in a mad rush but nobody knows where the food rush is coming from so they can not tell each other...which results in confusion..one colony was fine and had no mass of bees fanning at the entrance..the neighbouring colony was humming like a chain saw with masses of bees outside and half way up the brood box above the entrance...
This here(me) thick twat had forgotten to pull the inspection tray out and the bees where frantically trying trying to get the air con working through a narrow tunnel entrance..i pulled the inspection tray out 4in below the mesh floor and 10min's later all was back to normal..

Good point, Millet. I leave the inspection board on omf's all year round so maybe they have to work harder for the aircon. On the other hand I have a hive with solid floor, that doesn't seem to have a problem - but then I haven't reduced the entrance .

Treated with what newbeeneil?

I find sometimes bees can't get grip on the existing rough side of the cone so I enhance the grip by spraying the cone with cellulose paint and sprinkling in some dry sand/grit.
I don't get dead bees anymore in the syrup.

Thank you Newbeeneil. I stopped using these feeders as l couldn't bear to see drowned bees. I shall try again using your system.

so leaving a 4inch gap .. is that generally good practice for these inspection trays ....

Removed final apiguard dish and eek between showers. Double brood box and 1 super crammed with bees

The plastic rapid feeders I have, have both inner and outer surfaces of the cones ridged during manufacture .Also the inside surface of the cone cover .

Now finished all my mite treatments. The productions colonies all had Apiguard which finished 2-3 weeks ago and have just finished OAV on the nucs containing new queens to overwinter. I did not use thymol as did not want to put queens off lay at all. Main hives will not need feeding, but the nucs need some fondant which I will get tomorrow.

Same here but bees seem to slip into the syrup when I don't add extra grip. I get very few dead bees nowadays.

Care has to be exercised when removing the cone cover to given access for cleaning once empty !

Checked the accuracy of my refractometer, all was fine but the calibration fluid I use was out by one half a percent. I always use 2 different types to check calibration.

Attended Portsmouth Beekeepers association convention.
Excellent day, with really interesting and informative speakers.
:cheers2:
