What did you do in the Apiary today?

That could have been a shock if you did not know what you were doing. Shame they did not eat the eggs though.

There was a massive nectar flow on when they were laid.

There is a complete dearth here.
I would be trying to prepare a nuc for winter now. Even if things are very buoyant now, your new queen still has to build up her colony and prepare for winter. It will be 3-4 weeks before any eggs she lays now will be adults, so, I think its always best to look a month ahead.

All my queens from my second go at grafting have mated and laying well. Marked two of them today. My first attempt at grafting this year. Had two rounds and got 5 out of 20 accepted at each round. I know the experienced would deem this as pretty poor but I was chuffed. Can only get better with practice. All my main colonies except one are now headed by this years queens ( some from AS's). The temper and calmness of my bees is gradually improving. All are eminently manageable, and at last I have no followers. Intend to take the latest five queens through the winter in their home made wooden nucs. I put insulation round the whole block, and last year brought all of them through the winter. In the spring I then use them as brood factories as per Mike Palmer.
The grafting and selection of bees has added a whole new dimension to my beekeeping. Very reluctant to buy in queens.

I'm going to check my latest Q cells tomorrow, not sure how this lot will do as I have used a Q+ colony this time.
Even with this crappy weather I'm still going to try another batch after this lot but that will be it for this year.

Inspected the hives and took some photos. As soon as I can get them edited I will post a few up.
They definitely seem to be winding down now.

Placed Nicot Cupkit in my best honey performer - 95 lbs. I'll try another queen rearing round - nothing to lose...And it's fun..

Extracted another 2 supers - YTD 194 lbs from 3 hives and more to come. Good summer helps!!

I was hoping to raise a couple of queens from my gorgeous exmoore bucky queen but wasn't sure if it's getting a bit late. I'd like to over winter a couple of nucs for early season back up spring 2018.

Flow over here and not much more to come before the ivy

Took delivery of 2 new sturdy Parks polynucs - pva'd the inside of the feeders and vaselined the edges - [cheers Tankerjohn]

Made up 3 more Q- nucs ready for adding new queens midweek to overwinter

Spending the afternoon making up feeder ekes for the wooden nucs

Winter prep in full swing

Put apiguard on two non-production colonies.

(well to be precise, took honey box off one and put it on another colony to finish off so I could treat this mitey colony).

Both on solid floors so they will be getting a very stinky house for a bit.

Weather is a bit cr@p but probably good that many bees are at home to get a good dose of apiguard vapour.

A little bearding of course, bit they are sheltered enough from the rain. Just hope the queen/s don't get too upset.

Mitey or Mighty.

hopefully the latter for next year post treatment.

Run out of frames and supers!
Grafted 30 Amm and cell punched another 10.
Put some stabilising guy ropes on one of the Amm colonies... double brood plus 1/2 and now 8 supers, most full to the gunnels but not all capped.... Amms doing 1000% better that the sulky NZ Italians again this year!!
Balsom flourishing in the Lynher but mostly ripped out by the EA in the ......

Are you sure you didn't accidentally graft in a few Buckfast queens in your breeding program by mistake :D
If that is typical Cornish Amm' behaviour (and they were well behaved!) we'ed all be beating a path to your queens.
You win the bragging rights...I can only claim double brood and 6 supers on two of my better home bred F1's

Doubt if my Cornish Amm would survive your Northern weather.... possibly hybrid vigor as had some Cornish Amms from St Agnes last season.

I put it down to not only the right kind of bee and good forage,,, but also my incredible good luck as a beekeeperer!not worthy

Checked on the mated queen I bought after I failed to produce my own queen. And she be laying!!!! Nice solid pattern and her offspring will be emerging in the next week! Finger crossed they are nice and chilled

Brilliant let's hope for a good strong colony to go into winter, it is nice to hear good news now and again.

Southern softies!
Need hard as nails bees uuup north. Problem is the locals take the hard as nails to extreme.

In a funny way that is true, ever heard of the saying on a old film "Touch me and you will die" that is exactly what could happen with these northerners.. :D Bees i mean.
