After 4 years of keeping bees, I had my first extractable crop. I had intended to use the hot-air gun but I found that the cappings were brown rather than white. I was told this happens with some bees - they don't incorporate an "air bubble" under the capping. I therefore had concerns about localised heating of the honey behind the cappings so ended up using the cappings comb. I scratched the surface, which did not produce a lot of loose wax before putting into the extractor that I had borrowed from the local association. It had an integral coarse and fine mesh filter before the honey dropped down into a settling tank. After settling, I ran it through a fabric filter (Chinese - 200 mesh I think), trying not to reintroduce air into it again, ready for final settling before bottling.
