Thymol in winter?

Just recived this from my local assosiation and wondered what you thought has any one herd or tryed it

Soak cheap parcel string (the stuff sold in newsagents) in 20% solution of thymol in veg oil drain it and drape a 30" length over two brood frames top bars the bees gradually dismantled the string getting a continuous low dose of thymol

I'd rather my bees were busy clustering in the winter and not trying to get rid of foreign objects frmo their hive, which is what they'll see it as.
The minimal disturbance and stress throughout winter, the better, hence the apiguard in the Autumn.
