Is this argument still going on - its not important any more - what is important is how will I get my fix of Top Gear if Clarkson ends up behind bars. Apparently he is in the poo for his comments on the one show last night.

"These people who strike should be lined up and shot in front of their families" or close enough to that. Wow JK saying something bullish and devoid of any reality lol. Apparently some organisation may seek legal action lol.

Now that the dust has settled, how much were people actually disrupted by the strike? I know the govt and the unions will paint opposing pictures of the disruption, but what is the reality?

Personally I experienced very little disruption. I had a meeting cancelled at work because the occupational therapist was on strike, and when I returned home I found my rubbish had not been collected and had been scattered across the road by fox/cat/dog/whatever.
Other than that all was pretty much normal - school open etc.

Day as normal, but it was not our bin day and we have no children, enjoy good health, and tend not to get arrested or set fire to things.

There were lots of kids hanging around the various trains I use, and a fair few in both Birmingham and Watford town centre. They all seemed to be shopping. Could be a good day for retail? (shoplifting aside).

Some people have no sense of humour . Clarkson was clearly being ironic in all three of his comments quoted on the news :)

The South Northamptonshire Council operated as normal. My bins were even emptied.

As that is the only direct service i get for my taxes I can honestly say that it made no difference to me whatsoever.

The local schools were even open. As for Clarkson, I like him and Top Gear but thought everyone knew he was a buffoon. His comments should be treated as such.

"If you are unhappy with your pay, go and get a different job! Simples" - is a hopelessly naive and simplistic view

Well i am pretty naive and simple!

I just dont get it. Public sector workers are no different from anyone else apart from nurses/doctors/surgeons and also soldiers.
I think the above should be rewarded handsomely for thier efforts. I also think that soldiers sent to war on the whim of some crap politician should not have to pay tax on thier earnings. However, the rest? Phhhhh! Bunch of whingers.

Why is it that teachers feel that they are so special? No one forced them into the job and you only have to frequent a few internet forums to see that teachers havent actually been doing thier jobs to best of thier abilities have they (special emphisis on English teachers) ;)

So you won't expect the fire brigade to turn up if you have a fire and you don't need any law and order as provided by the police.

I'll agree with the first sentence
Now there is someone not quite in touch with reality, I'm away from home at the moment, won't be back for two weeks. This is my regular work pattern, I patrol British waters and never know what will meet me on the next vessel I board. I don't complain at the wage I get, but it could be better - this has been the case since I accepted my Queen's commission some twenty four years ago. It always was the case that, your wages aren't that good, don't expect it to get better but the trade off was you can retire at sixty with a pension that is what I was promised the money the government saved from keeping my pay low is what would have been my pensions contribution - it was a scheme the government foisted on us in the 70's you cannot now say sorry - we're reneging on that agreement. It's too late really for me to seek another job, most of my skills are unique to the one I do. That one eyed Scottish methodist id ee ott Broon sold our pension fund on ebay (the gold reserves) if you like.I agree the government have the right (and would be foolish not to) change the conditions of service for new entrants, but it's not right they switch the light off and the end of our, the old stagers tunnel

Thought that word was reserved for the present Mayor of London... Borris the Buffoon?

I like that word and use it where it will fit. In this case it is quite apt. I think Boris comes across as a buffoon, but in reality he is pretty shrewd.

This is a ruse used by the English gentry for centuries - act stupid and no-one takes you seriously, whilst behind the clown's mask you can find the weaknesses of your opponent and strike unexpectedly. The character of the scarlet pimpernel in fiction is a good example.
I use a variant of this ruse to great effect - I act daft, lull them into a false sense of security and when they least expect it I reveal..................................
That I'm daft (or twp as we say in Wales) :D

Ok the fire service do a job that is dangerous and grim at times, but they are pretty well paid for it.

The police on the other hand, cmon!!!

I suppose next you will be saying that dustmen should get an annual pay rise above inflation. FFS
