Whatever good was put into thermal characteristics by the straw is obviated by the holes in the boxes

But you can close the holes and probably plug them with cork or a tight twist of straw.

Is the layer of straw (probably 3cm thick - am I right?) sandwiched between the planks good enough as insulation?

Probably find the insulation nuts will go for it but they'll not like the ventilation bit!

Looks a bit like Bob Flowerdew designed / built it though.
Not sure if it would last into the summer too flimsy.
