Curious about family ancestry I have researched my own and my wife's forebears. My direct line goes back to SW Scotland, with maternal-side links to Lincolnshire. My wife's include Ireland, France and ... to our great surprise, Norfolk [not far from where we have settled]. What intrigues me is some of the stories thrown up over the 350 years on my side and 450 years on my wife's. Conclusion: like my bees, happy to be mongrels and content to live where we are now. Am I interested in DNA analysis to get even more enlightenment on origins? No.
As you probably appreciate, from my name, our ancestry is Scottish - we came down with the young pretender in the '45 ... and then returned to Derbyshire when it was all over - obviously seeing the more favourable climate and income opportunities preferable to the hardships of the Scottish highlands. We were well known in the area of Heage in Derbyshire as (alleged) Highwaymen preying on unsuspecting night travellers on the Ripley to Derby turnpike ... which ran alongside our property (Heage Hall - it's still there) - rumours were the victims were buried somewhere on the land ! I think I'm safe now as the statute of limitations has probably expired for ancestral crime - although a certain Welsh member on here would probably like to see prosecution for ancestral crimes enshrined in law !!

so if we follow Austria's lead - the best thing for the country would be to abolish the saxe coburg gotha mountbattens and all their hangers on
When the last Duke of westminster was asked what advice he would give to young entrepreneurs , he replied "It helps if you are related to William the Conqueror".
Two things we should have left behind in the 20thC, the 'nobility' and religion.
They still own most of the land.......
On a lighter note I am a decendant of Muhamed throught the sixth shia imam, Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq.

Well it was a Channel 4 documentary ... as usual it only explores one side and in this case it was the side of those who would prefer to see a Republic and I admit I am not in favour of a replublic. The Crown Estate (it does not all belong to Charles and William) own some of the most beautiful land in the UK and preserve it - If all this was returned to the people ie: 'The Government' I wonder how long it would take them to sell of the asset - probably to those rich people that true Socialists appear to despise !

I think, if you set aside the issues of wealth, that Charles has, throughout his life, championed some very worthwhile causes and William seems to be shaping up in a very caring vein. There are always going to be those with great wealth in any society - some inherited, some earned - what they put back in society and their personal integrity is what matters to me. I suspect that the charges levied (and in many cases they are peppercorns) in many cases just go back into the maintenance of the estate

From what I see in our politicians (and worse - those across the Atlantic and in some other countries around the world) I'd rather see what we have in place here than the alternative of an all powerful president with no checks and balances.

I'm not saying that there are not some reforms necessary in our Royalty - there are hangers on that have shown a total disrespect to our society that should be cast aside but I can't say I'm in favour of the alternatives or harping on about the 'wrongs' that were inflicted by previous generations - the past is history, remember it, discuss it, learn from it and move on.
I don't want a president Blair !
This argument/excuse is always brought up for not having a republic and it's a falsehood.
An awful lot of countries have presidents who are merely figure heads of state with no real political power.
Without looking tell me who the presidents of Ireland, Germany and Austria are.
You can't ?
The nobility have always been leeches.
Also seem to think we have socialists in power, that's laughable to be honest.
The UK is now a one party state run on behalf of the oligarchy.
A seamless transition to Tories 2.0.
NOTA !

This UK one party state seems defined by remoteness from Joe Public. In general, it seems that whichever tribe is in power at a national or county [or equivalent] level the less they want to represent the electorate. Pet, white elephant projects which waste squillions [e.g. HS2] abound, and even those which purport to be mandated by a significant part of the electorate [e.g. brexit] are "delivered" very badly.

Thankfully, our bees seem far better organised. Their "democracy" ensures that their "chief executive" [Q] is kept accountable and in touch. The things that matter to them are prioritised and unselfishly. Perhaps, advocates of the theory of evolution might explain why natural selection didn't run through honeybees to humans - we'd all be a lot sweeter! 😉
