Curious about family ancestry I have researched my own and my wife's forebears. My direct line goes back to SW Scotland, with maternal-side links to Lincolnshire. My wife's include Ireland, France and ... to our great surprise, Norfolk [not far from where we have settled]. What intrigues me is some of the stories thrown up over the 350 years on my side and 450 years on my wife's. Conclusion: like my bees, happy to be mongrels and content to live where we are now. Am I interested in DNA analysis to get even more enlightenment on origins? No.
As you probably appreciate, from my name, our ancestry is Scottish - we came down with the young pretender in the '45 ... and then returned to Derbyshire when it was all over - obviously seeing the more favourable climate and income opportunities preferable to the hardships of the Scottish highlands. We were well known in the area of Heage in Derbyshire as (alleged) Highwaymen preying on unsuspecting night travellers on the Ripley to Derby turnpike ... which ran alongside our property (Heage Hall - it's still there) - rumours were the victims were buried somewhere on the land ! I think I'm safe now as the statute of limitations has probably expired for ancestral crime - although a certain Welsh member on here would probably like to see prosecution for ancestral crimes enshrined in law !!
