I have some poly boxes to catch some rain and the geese demolished them
You are a new beekeeper (i.e.....never kept bees before) and you have poly beehives as rain traps?

Not as fast as they do with poly hives, which even the wasps bore holes into, unlike the wooden ones from what i see here, and nothing copes too well chewing/boring through the plywood hives, especially woodpeckers.

Yes, but those holes were not made by wasps were they?... and those boxes are not ply, as i was talking about with regards woodpeckers, they love poly... or cedar like in your pictures though.

So, regards the moulding dents. What is a good filler to use other than the stuff they sell on bee websites?

They were made by green woodpeckers. They're a nuisance around here. I have photos of both cedar and high density poly hives completely destroyed by woodpeckers. They'll go through both without any problem.
Wasps will try to gnaw at the wood but don't get anything from the high density poly...although I think this has more to do with marking the hive for attack by other wasps

Not so much Beehive wise but where a Rat or Mouse decides to chew holes you will spot it in wood before the damage is done, and fix the problem i fear it would be too late with polystyrene .

Mesh around would stop the pecker but not a Rat..

What do you think these 532 would have done near a poly hive

I'm sure the gentlemen involved observed fully the relevant legislation. It is also possible these are a collection of poisoned rats and no hunting with canines was involved.
Perhaps the photo was taken in pre blairite days?

What is the legislation regards hunting rats?

As a kid in Yorkshire I used to take my Yorkshire terriers ratting on the tip .. I used to get a shilling a tail from the Council. (For the dead rats of course). I could make a pound on a good day (20 shillings to the pound for those less than 50 !) There's a fortune at today's prices in that carpet of rats. Some big beggars there as well ....

I used to get 8p a skin for mole skins, old money, plus money for jays wings, hares ears, rabbits, grey squirrels, which i sold to the yanks... fox skins and several other things on the list.

Used to get a current price list and free postage labels from Horace Friend and Veniard, every year, plus one other, but cannot remember the name.
