Is it normal for bees to start storing pollen in the supers, have checked our hives today and one of them has a fair amount of pollen in one of the two supers on it. There is plenty of room in the brood box so was a bit unsure as to why they would be doing this.

Pollen should not be in the supers. It is a sign that your brood box is too small. Note that many National users operate brood and a half, or double brood.

If anyone hasn't noticed ... supers are for honey.

I used to have a small amount of pollen when running bees in commercial hives, I shouldn't worry too much if a small amount is left in combs after extraction.

Run with drone brood in your supers and you'll simulate what the bees do with wild comb situated away from the brood nest. Honey stored in large cells and as near as dammit no pollen.

On the downside you could end up with hundreds if not thousands of drones if madam goes for a trip on the upper levels. BTDTGTTS
